MALIBU, Calif.— Hahni Johnson and
Amanda Ollinger won both of their No. 1 doubles matches to improve to 20-2 on the season to lead the Colorado Mesa University beach volleyball team's efforts in an otherwise difficult Friday for the Mavericks, who fell 4-1 to both Concordia University Irvine and the host Pepperdine University Waves.
The Mavericks have now dropped three straight decisions, all by 4-1 scores, after winning a program-record eight straight duals and are now 12-6 overall.
Pepperdine had also defeated CUI in the first leg of the tri-dual and is now 9-7. CUI is 14-7.
Johnson and Ollinger were the only Mavericks to earn team points. They defeated the Golden Eagles' top duo of Kali Uhl and Kelissa Leomine by a 21-19, 21-17 score and then came from behind to defeat the Waves' Kate Clermont and McKenna Thomas by a 9-21, 23-21, 15-8 margin in three sets.
Cedar Bellows and
Lucy Kaufman were also able to record a 17-21, 21-19, 15-8 win over CUI in an extra 6's match No. 2 Maverick pair
Riley Daugherty and
Sierra Hunt won the first set against Pepperdine's Madison Oriskovich and Kristine Briede. However, the Wave pair outlasted Daugherty and Hunt, 31-29 in the second and eventually won the encounter by a 15-6 margin in the third set.
The other matches in both duals were decided in straight sets.
The Mavericks will continue the PCH Invite and wrap up their week in southern California on Saturday when they head to nearby Los Angeles to take on tenth-ranked LMU and Tulane, receiving votes in the
latest AVCA Collegiate Beach Poll.
