#23 Mavericks continue home stand against Cougars

SERIES HISTORY
Colorado Mesa will continue their home stand with a four-game series against the Colorado Christian Cougars at The Diamond. The series is set to begin on Friday evening at 6:05pm.

Colorado Mesa has dominated the all-time series since CCU began their program in 2006. The Mavericks are 91-11 in the series including 46-4 at home. This will be the first time since 2021 that the regular season series will be played in Grand Junction.

The Mavericks won all five matchups last season with the final game coming in the first game of the RMAC Tournament, a 4-3 win on Wednesday evening May 10, 2023.

SCOUTING THE COUGARS
It's no hiding that Colorado Christian has struggled this season as they are 2-23 on the season but has played a relatively tough schedule thus far. They were swept by both Cal State San Bernadino and Georgia Southwestern in the non-conference.

The Cougars have just three players batting above the .300 mark and that group is led by Aaron Morgan. He is batting .318 with six doubles, two triples and two home runs. He has recorded at least one hit in nine of his last 10 games played.

Jake Gimble leads the Cougars staff with a 1-5 mark and a 7.47 ERA. Gimble has faced the Mavericks in the past and has given them problems.

MAVERICK SWEEP
Colorado Mesa was the first team this season to sweep the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference weekly awards. Senior outfielder Robert Sharrar was named the RMAC Player of the Week while junior pitcher Evan Bunevich earned RMAC Pitcher of the Week honors.

Sharrar batted .588 (10-for-17) with a double, three home runs, seven runs scored and eight runs driven in during the series sweep. He had an OPS of 1.808 and was able to help the Mavericks hit .380 as a team in the four games.

Bunevich has been one of the key long relievers for the Mavericks and could make a start soon. In the series opener, Bunevich came into the game in the top of the third inning and was able to complete the game pitching seven innings while only giving up one run. He scattered four hits, walked three and struck out five while allowing the Orediggers to hit just .167 in that stretch.

MORE SHARRAR
There is no way to hide the fact that leadoff man Robert Sharrar is on an absolute tear. He entered the conference season and game one of the MSU Denver series with a .296 batting average and has raised that to a .389 clip following the Colorado School of Mines weekends.

In the eight conference games this season, Sharrar is batting .528 (19-for-36) with 14 runs scored, 16 runs driven in and six home runs. Remind you that the two teams they have faced were predicted to finish in the top half of the conference.

COMEBACK KIDS
The Mavericks earned the series sweep over the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers last weekend at The Diamond. In each one of those wins the Mavericks faced a deficit that they had to overcome. In game one, they faced a 6-3 hole and wound up winning 10-6 then in game two they trailed 7-1 and came back for a 15-9 win. Game three saw them trail 9-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth before winning 11-9. Then, in the finale they faced a 5-4 gap heading to the seventh before winning 15-8.

Eight of the Mavericks 14 wins this season, they have faced at least a one run deficit at some point. Never count them out.

THE LEFTIES
Colorado Mesa welcomed back one of their lefties in Bridger Clontz as he took the ball in game four of the series. Clontz and junior Caleb Ruter, and junior Tyler Glowacki are the three lefties that pitched this past weekend. They combined to pitch eight innings and allowed four earned runs on five hits, walked five and struck out nine.

DEEP LOOK AT THE TEAM NUMBERS
Thanks to InkBlot Sports we have a pretty good gauge of where things are in the NCAA South Central Region. The Mavericks are fourth in the region in strength of schedule at .527 (combined winning percentages of teams they have played) and are third in Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) at .543.

One of the biggest factors in recent years has been the Performance Indicator or PI. Colorado Mesa is second in the region in PI at 19.182 which is behind conference foe Regis who sits at 21.136.

MAVERICKS IN MILB
The Colorado Mesa baseball team currently has eight players competing at some level of professional baseball. All eight finished in the minors but two of them saw action in Major League Baseball during the 2023 season. Bligh Madris saw action with the Houston Astros while Kyle Leahy made his MLB debut with the St. Louis Cardinals on July 7.
