TEMPE, Ariz.— For the second time in five days, the Colorado Mesa University beach volleyball team swept all five matches and ten sets against Park University Gilbert, cruising past the Buccaneers 5-0 as they wrapped up the Arizona State University Sun Devil Invitational and a 9-day, 9-match swing through Arizona here on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks went 6-3 throughout the trip and 2-1 on the weekend tournament, claiming two wins over the Buccaneers, who they had also beat on Tuesday after topping the NAIA's top-ranked Ottawa University of Arizona in nearby Scottsdale.
The Mavs were dominant in all five matches, winning the sets by an average of nearly ten points while holding their opponents to below ten points in three of them.
Hahni Johnson and
Amanda Ollinger were the most dominant in the No. 1 match, taking down Railey Druxman and Daisys Moates, 21-5, 21-12. They are now 8-1 on the season.
Meanwhile,
Savannah Ott and
Barett Nolan posted a pair of 21-12 set wins at No. 4 to deliver the Mavs' first point, minutes before
Riley Daugherty and
Sierra Hunt registered a 21-14, 21-17 win at No. 2 while improving to 7-2 overall, including a 7-1 record in that flight.
The Mavs were also quite dominant in the third and fifth flights, respectively.
Savannah Spitzer and
Gracyn Spresser were 21-9, 21-18 winners at No. 3 while
Cedar Bellows and
Sabrina VanDeList recorded a 21-8, 21-11 win at No. 5 over Eliza Pearson and Avery Turk. That was VanDeList's 50
th career victory as she continues to add on to her program record for wins, which she had set against the Buccaneers on Tuesday.
The Mavs will be off next weekend before playing at home on the Mar. 15-16 weekend.
