GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University beach volleyball team ran its winning streak to six with their fourth and fifth straight 5-0 victories on Friday over visiting Trinidad State College at the CMU Beach Courts.
The Mavericks won all ten official matches of the dual doubleheader in straight sets and added two other straight-set extra match wins as they moved to 10-3 overall this season while remaining perfect (18-0) at home in the history of the program.
The Trojans fell to 0-4 on the season.
The Mavericks held their opponents to single digits in seven of the 12 sets of the first dual and five more times in the second.
The Mavs used the same 1-5 pair lineup in both duals as the No. 1, 2, 3 and 4 pairs all faced the same Trojan opponents in both.
Sabrina VanDeList and
Savannah Spitzer delivered the dual clinching point in both affairs at No. 3 as they moved to 4-0 since joining forces last week after playing in the first nine duals with different partners.
They were 21-7, 21-13 victors over Neveah Martinez and Deniz Yileri in the first dual and defeated the Trojan pair by an even more convincing 21-9, 21-5 margin in the second.
CMU No. 1 duo
Hahni Johnson and
Amanda Ollinger also improved to 12-1 on the season, dominating Anna Jasinsky and Ellie Ames. Johnson and Ollinger won both sets of the first match by 21-8 scorelines and then won 21-7, 21-10 in the second.
Meanwhile,
Riley Daugherty and
Sierra Hunt improved to 11-2 at No. 2 with 21-9, 21-14 and 21-11, 21-11 victories over Sophia Quizon and Claire Johnson.
Barett Nolan and
Gracyn Spresser were also victorious in both of the No. 4 matches, which were the first to be decided in each dual. They defeated Nikolina Werbick and Amya Speller by a 21-13, 21-6 margin and then came back to win the second match 21-12, 21-10.
Taylor Scherff and
Savannah Ott were also 2-0 on the day on Court 5. They recorded a 21-7, 21-7 win over Myrah Abdallah-Boehm and Raeann Savage in the first before taking out Genesis Casillas and Eimaya Medina by a 21-11, 21-6 margin in the second match-up.
CMU's
Cedar Bellows and
Lucy Kaufman were 21-12, 21-15 winners over Casillas and Medina in an extra match during the first dual.
Sofia Kolbe and
Ania Swartzendruber were then 21-5, 21-11 winners over Abdallah-Boehm and Savage in the 6's during the second dual.
The teams will square off in another dual on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. prior to CMU Senior Day festivities, where they will honor Bellows, Johnson, Ollinger, Ott, Spitzer and VanDeList.
Following at approximately Noon, the two teams will split into individual pairs to compete in a 16-pair single elimination bracket style tournament, which will feature single-set matches to 21, a change to the original format of the weekend.
