Box Score 2 DENVER, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa baseball team bounced back to sweep a doubleheader from the MSU Denver Roadrunners on Sunday (Mar. 10) afternoon at the Assembly Athletic Complex.
Colorado Mesa exploded for 13 runs on 14 hits and received a solid pitching performance in a 13-3 bounce back performance in game one of the day.
The Mavericks struck early in the top of the first inning when they got an RBI single from
Paul Schoenfeld and a bases loaded hit by pitch to
Kennedy Hara to take the 2-0 lead.
They were able to break it open in the top half of the fifth inning as they scored six runs on five hits.
They got one on an error which brought
Max Valdez in who reached on a double to lead the inning off. Later in the inning,
Kyle Miller had a two-run double, and he was followed by an RBI single by
Max Berni.
The final blow in the fifth inning was a three-run double by
Ethan Nunez which made the score 8-0.
The Mavericks plated five in the seventh inning on a pair of big flies. After a Rob Sharrar double to lead the inning off,
Jonathan Gonzalez hit a two-run home run to left center field in his first game back from injury.
Later in the seventh,
Kolby Felix hit a three-run home run to left field to make it 13-3. It was Felix's first home run of the season in just his second game played this season.
Cole Seward earned the win on the mound after pitching five innings. He allowed three runs on five hits, walked three and struck out three to improve to a team-best 3-0 mark on the season.
The onslaught continued in game two of the doubleheader as the Mavericks scored 16 runs on 15 hits and belted three home runs in a 16-14 win over the Roadrunners.
Eight of the nine batters in the lineup were able to secure a hit and all nine batters scored at least one run.
Robert Sharrar finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two runs driven in. In the fourth inning, Sharrar hit a solo shot to right center field which gave the Mavericks a 12-2 lead at the time.
Max Valdez went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs driven in. The junior gave the Mavericks their final runs of the game in the top of the sixth inning when he hit a two-run home run to right center field to make it 16-10 at the time.
Ethan Nunez had a nice day at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and four runs driven in. In the top of the fourth, Nunez belted a two-run, tape measure, home run to left field that gave the Mavericks a 14-2 advantage.
Kennedy Hara and
Christos Stefanos each had two hits as well.
Liam Hohenstein earned the win on the mound to move his record to 3-1 on the season. He allowed six hits and struck out six in the start.
JJ Almeda came onto pitch the seventh and earned his first save of the season.
The Mavericks will look to claim the series win as the two teams will conclude their RMAC opening weekend tomorrow at 12pm.
