TUCSON, Ariz.— No. 1 pair
Hahni Johnson and
Amanda Ollinger completed a perfect 4-0 weekend as they led the Colorado Mesa University beach volleyball team to a Saturday morning sweep of the University of San Francisco and Cal State Bakersfield.
The Mavericks defeated the Dons, 3-2 and then clipped the Roadrunners by the same score as they finished the Cactus Classic weekend with a 2-2 overall mark.
The Mavericks also received a 2-0 day from
Riley Daugherty and
Sierra Hunt in the second flight and claimed dual clinching wins on Court 5 in both matches against the NCAA Division I foes.
Johnson and Ollinger gave the Mavs their first point against USF with a 21-14, 21-11 win over Letizia Aquilino and Moorea Wood. The Mavs then won two of the three 3-set matches to claim the overall win over the Dons.
Daugherty and Hunt were 21-14, 14-21, 15-11 victors over McKenna Towne and Jette Morris before
Savannah Ott and
Barett Nolan clinched the dual with a thrilling come-from-behind 16-21, 21-13, 17-15 win on Court 5.
Things were a bit more straight forward for the Mavs against the Roadrunners as Johnson and Ollinger cruised past Megan Gilbert and Pearl Morre, 21-8, 21-18. Daugherty and Hunt then won 21-13, 21-17 over Alyson Cooper and Oliv Silacci-Jensen.
The Roadrunners were able to win on Court 4, but the Mavericks quickly responded with 3-set wins on Court 3 and Court 5.
Cedar Bellows and
Sabrina VanDeList then picked up their first win of the young season to clinch the dual on Court 5. They were 13-21, 21-17, 15-12 winners over Isabella Almeida and Katey Milne.
VanDeList now has 47 career wins, just one shy of the Mavericks' all-time record of 48, held by
Holly Schmidt, while Bellows, a graduate transfer, won for the first time in her brief time as a Mav.
The Mavericks will stay in Arizona for another week, taking on NAIA No. 1-ranked Ottawa University of Arizona on Tuesday in Scottsdale before playing three matches in next weekend's Sun Devil Invitational at Arizona State in Tempe.
