CHADRON, Neb. – The No. 9 Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team sent a small group to the Chadron State Open on Saturday (Dec. 7) and that group came away with a lot of hardware as they crowned three champions and had a total of 10 top-5 place winners.
Jennesis Martinez made her season debut this afternoon and walked away with the title and a 3-0 record at 103 pounds. The Albuquerque, N.M. native opened with a pin then had a 10-0 technical fall in her semifinal bout before a 6-4 decision victory of Jennifer Thomas of Snow in finals match.
Junior
Isabella Morales finished in second place at 110 pounds as she made her season debut on Saturday. Morales had a pair of wins early with one coming by technical fall and the other by decision. In her finals match, she fell to Simon Fraser's Kelsey Louen 9-1 in that bout to close out her day.
The Mavericks had a banner day at 124 pounds as they had a 1-2-3 finish at the weight.
Alejandra Valdiviezo defeated her teammate
Brooke McCurley in the title bout 10-0 to win the weight while
Thalia Vogelsang finished third after defeating Adams State's Bella Devoto 10-0 in the placement match.
The freshman trio went a combined 11-2 in the tournament with McCurley and Vogelsang's only losses coming to their teammate Valdiviezo who had two technical fall wins and a pair of pins en route to the title.
Alyssa Jackson earned a technical fall win over Texas Woman's Ploy Timpanee 14-4 to claim fifth place at 131 pounds.
At 138 pounds,
Keyla Ajoleza placed fourth after reaching the semifinals of the weight. Ajoleza fell to nationally ranked Jade Trolland of Simon Fraser 10-0 before bouncing back with a 6-0 decision win over Pua Beebe of Minot State.
Freshman
Kate Bird had a solid day as she finished in third at 160 pounds. Bird went 4-1 on the day as she finished with two tech falls and two pins. In her third-place bout, she earned a 14-4 technical fall win over Poorna Babu of Texas Woman's.
The Mavericks had a pair of placers at 180 pounds with freshman
Alison Evans taking home the title after a 10-1 win over Ella Shevlin of Chadron State in the title bout. Evans had a pair of technical fall wins leading up to her finals bout.
Redshirt freshman
Maggie Smith placed fourth at 180 pounds after going 3-2 on the day. Smith opened the day with a pair of pins before falling in the semifinals 4-4 on criteria. She bounced back with a 10-2 decision victory before falling by pin in the third-place match.
Colorado Mesa will be back in action on Sunday December 21 when they travel to Sin City for a series of duals at the Wartburg College Desert Duals.
