SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Colorado Mesa University Men's Basketball Team went down early in today's game before mounting a large comeback and having four players score in double figures to defeat the Broncos of University of Central Oklahoma 77-71 at Northside ISD Sports Gym at the River City Holiday Classic.
With the win CMU now improves to 5-6 on the season and breaks their four-game losing streak. In turn, they handed UCO their third consecutive loss of the season as they fell to 4-5 on the year to drop below .500.
Leading the Mavs in today's game was a quartet of players to score in double figures with two of them securing double-doubles for the first time this season. Leading that group was the duo of Will Mortimore and Christopher Speller with Mortimore scoring 18 points and Speller scoring 14. The duo also finished with 11 rebounds apiece.
Ty Allred and Yaak Yaak also finished in double figure scoring with Allred scoring 11 and Yaak adding 10.
Mason Honeyman dropped six points in the game but also grabbed eight rebounds for third best on the team and for a new career high.
The trio of Mortimore, Speller and Allred made significant contributions in today's game as the three of them combined to go 19-24 from the free throw line to help bolster the Mavs' offense.
The Mavs only shot 1-10 from the three-point line in the game but made up for it by shooting 46.6% from the field and 78.6% from the stripe which were both better marks than the Broncos.
The Broncos were paced by Jacobi Sebock, Luke Haasl and Israel Hart with the three all scoring in double figures as well. Sebock finished with 17 to lead to the team with Haasl adding 16 and Hart finishing with 14.
Early into today's game CMU looked overmatched with just four minutes into the game the Mavs were down 11-2 and started flat while finding their offensive rhythm. They would claw their way back to finally getting into double digits in the ninth minute when the game was now 19-11, before making their first half push that claimed the lead at halftime. Finishing the half on a 6-0 run the Mavs took their first lead of the day on a made two-point jumper by Mason Honeyman with two seconds left in the half to lead the Broncos 32-30 at halftime.
Mortimore led the Mavs with seven points in the first half with Allred and Yaak each scoring six themselves.
The second half was much tighter, with the lead going back and forth four times. The Mavs eventually made their push to put the game away as they went on a 13-2 lead over the last five minutes to secure the victory. During that run they made all three field goals they attempted while going 7-9 on free throws.
CMU will now play once more this week when they face off with host team Pittsburg State University tomorrow at 2 p.m. MST. The game will cost $20 to watch but will have live stats and radio broadcasting from Pitt State as an option to follow along with as well.
