SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Finishing up their trip to the River City Holiday Classic, the Colorado Mesa University Men's Basketball saw themselves collect another victory this afternoon as they defeated the tournament host, Pittsburg State University by a score of 68-60 at the Northside ISD Sports Gym.
The Mavericks are now on a two-game winning streak and leave the Holiday Classic with two wins heading into their break. Their record moves to .500 once again as they are now 6-6 on the year. Their defeat over Pitt State moves the Gorillas to 6-5 on the season, as they went 0-2 in their trip to San Antonio.
Five different players scored in double figures for the Mavs as the team used a balanced attack to maintain a lead over the Gorillas for over 37 minutes of the game. Ty Allred finished with 18 points to lead the team and was joined by Yaak Yaak with 13 points, Mason Honeyman and Will Mortimore with 12 points and Harvey White with 10 points to bolster the offense. Mortimore also ended with a double-double in the game as he finished with 13 rebounds.
Mortimore's double-double this afternoon was his second-straight and fourth of the season. He's the only player on the team this season to record any double doubles.
Yaak grabbed nine rebounds in the win to compliment his 13 points to finish one board short of his first career double-double.
The Gorillas were led by three players in their defeat with Tane Prictor, Tanner Mans and Jordan Frison all scoring in double figures. Prictor finished with 14 points to lead the team.
The Mavs outshot the Gorillas in all three areas of the game as they finished at 45.3% from the field, 36.4% from the three-point line and 69.6% from the free throw line, which all finished higher than Pitt State. CMU also outrebounded the Gorillas by grabbing 45 boards compared to their 36.
Picking up where they left off yesterday the Mavs came out of the gate firing today as they started the game on a 10-4 run through just five minutes of play. They only allowed the Gorillas to lead one time during the first 20 minutes when they answered back with a three pointer in the 17th minute to top the Mavs 19-18. Pitt State's lead wouldn't last long though as CMU responded with an 8-0 run to end the half and lead 26-19.
Mortimore contributed significantly to his double-double day in the first half as he was the leading scorer of all players at that point with nine points and already having eight rebounds.
The Gorillas brought the game to within three points in the second half but were never able to grab the lead as CMU closed out the day with a 42-point period. Allred scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half alone to help put them away.
Upon the conclusion of today's game, the Mavs will now take a two and a half week break for the Winter holidays before returning to action in Brownson Arena this January when they host New Mexico Highlands University and Adams State University in their return to RMAC play on January 9 and 11.
