GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 7 Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team hosted their annual Maverick Open on Saturday (Nov. 2) afternoon in Brownson Arena. The Mavericks had a stellar day as they crowned three champions and had a total of 14 place in the top-6 of their respective weight classes
Freshmen
Sophia Cornish (110) and
Gretchen Donally (160) claimed championships while senior
Jayleen Sekona earned the title at 207 pounds.
Cornish was dominant on her way to the 110-pound championship as she earned a technical fall win in all four of her matches. She defeated UNLV's Jasi Oleson 10-0 in her first bout before another 10-0 victory over Liliana Voakes of Ottawa sent her to the semifinals. There, she faced an opponent she saw last night in Fort Hays State's Sophia Schultz and for the second straight time she earns a victory 20-10.
The Mission Viejo, Calif. native faced another opponent that she has seen before in Snow College's Rachel Jones but this time the faced each other in the finals. Cornish came out on top for the second straight time this one in a 12-1 technical fall win.
Fellow freshman
Gretchen Donally claimed the 160-pound title but took a slightly different path than her teammate. The Ballantine, Mont. native earned lopsided wins in her first three bouts of the day as she scored back-to-back technical fall wins and followed with a pin in the quarterfinals. She earned a 12-4 win over her teammate
Kate Bird in the semifinal.
In the final, Donally defeated Fort Hays State's Kaylee Ricketts 6-4 for the second straight night to remain undefeated on the season.
Senior
Jayleen Sekona earned the championship at 207-pounds after a 10-3 decision victory over Fort Hays State's Ciara Monger in the final bout. Sekona picked up a 49 second pin in her first bout of the day followed by a 10-0 technical fall win over Grace Johns of Fort Hays State in the semifinals.
The veteran duo of
Erica Smith and
Celina Cooke both placed at 145 pounds. Smith worked her way into the finals after earning a criteria victory in her first bout followed by a pin of her teammate
Mollie Dare in the semifinals. Smith fell in the final to Maegan Flaherty by pin to finish as the runner-up
Celina Cooke placed fourth at 145 pounds and finished the day at 3-2.
Maddison Heinzer (103),
Jojo McDaniel (117),
Alejandra Valdiviezo (124) and
Kate Bird (160) all placed third in their weight classes.
Heinzer defeated Hannah Selle of Fort Hays State by technical fall 10-0 in the third-place match while McDaniel picked up a pin of Tiger Isabell Ortiz at 2:24 in her third-place bout. Bird pinned Utah Tech's Tayleigh Robertson at 1:09 to claim third in her first action as a Maverick.
Valdiviezo picked up a 12-2 technical fall win over her teammate
Brooke McCurley in the third-place match. McCurley finished the day 3-2 in her first action as a Maverick.
Thalia Vogelsang (124),
Mollie Dare (145) and
Maggie Smith all took fifth place while
Isabella Cruz (110) placed sixth in their respective weight classes.
The Mavericks will hit the road for the first time next weekend as they compete in a pair of duals at Texas Woman's in Denton, Texas next Saturday. They will take on the Pioneers in a RMAC dual before a non-conference dual against William Jewell.
