GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University men's soccer student-athletes
Diego Chavez,
Connor Chilson and
Joao Pedro Moraes were all named to the College Sports Communicators NCAA Division II Academic All-District® Men's Soccer Team, which were released by the organization on Tuesday.
Chavez was also selected to advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America® ballot, which will be announced on Dec. 10 following a vote of CSC (formerly known as CoSIDA/College Sports Information Directors of America) membership. The goalkeeper also earned Academic All-District® honors in 2023. Chilson and Moraes are first time honorees.
In order to be eligible for the Academic All-District® honors, student-athletes must be a sophomore or above both athletically and academically and have a 3.50 or higher GPA. They also must have played in 90 percent or started 2/3 of their team's games. Institutions are limited six nominations per gender.
Chavez, a redshirt junior from Longmont, Colorado, holds a 3.62 GPA and is majoring in business administration. He was named to the Second Team All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference team last week after leading the RMAC with 90 saves this season. He also led the conference in saves per game (5.29) and posted three shutouts while ranking third in the RMAC for save percentage (.783). He also earned a third straight RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll selection last week.
Named as the 2023 RMAC Goalkeeper of the Year and to the Second Team D2CCA All-South Central Region team last year, Chavez has played started in net in every game of the Mavs' past two seasons and ranks third in CMU history for career saves (191) and fourth for career save percentage (.789). He also ranks fourth in program history for goalie games played (43), shutouts (12) and wins (18).
Chilson, a redshirt sophomore defender from Vista, California, holds a 3.56 GPA and is majoring in exercise science. He has been named to the RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll in each of the past two years and played in 16 games while making nine starts for the Mavericks this fall. He also assisted on two goals from his back-line position.
Moraes, a redshirt junior midfielder from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, holds a 3.62 GPA and is majoring in business administration. He played in all 17 of the Mavericks' games this fall and made five starts. He scored against nationally-ranked UCCS on Sept. 26 and took five shots on goal. He was also named to the RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll for the second straight season this fall.
