CHADRON, Neb.— Nicole Martin put down 14 kills on .500 hitting while
Sydney Leffler recorded a 10-kill, 11-dig double-double while moving into the No. 5 spot of Colorado Mesa University history for career kills as the Maverick volleyball extended their winning streak to eight with a 3-set road sweep of Chadron State College on Tuesday night here in the Eagles' Chicoine Center.
The Mavericks also matched a season-high with nine service aces in the 25-17, 25-17, 26-14 victory and improved to 16-3 overall and to 8-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings while the Eagles fell to 4-15 overall and to 0-9 in the league with a fifth straight loss.
The Mavericks have now won 30 straight matches over the Eagles since 1995 and finished a 3-match road-swing over the last five days with what was their first sweep in eight matches.
Led by Martin and Leffler, the Mavericks finished with a 45-35 advantage in total kills but really dominated the serving game, tripling up the Eagles on aces while committing two fewer service error than the Eagles, who were guilty of seven.
Leffler and Maverick setter
Sabrina VanDeList, who finished with 39 assists and eight digs, both finished the match with three aces.
Hahni Johnson also had two while
Jordan Woods added another.
The Mavs also tallied six blocks and were blocked just twice by the Eagles and
Stormi Tadlock finished with four blocks while
Sierra Hunt added three while recording nine kills offensively.
With her ten kills, Leffler raised her career total to 1,391, moving her two past Pam Glenn for the fifth spot on the Mavs' all-time charts. The reigning RMAC Player of the Week and 2023 Player of the Year also recorded her third straight and sixth double-double of the Mavs' winning streak as she and CMU libero
Allison Waller both finished with 11 digs.
The Mavericks were quite efficient in the first and second sets, hitting .300 in the first and .400 in the second before finishing the match at .263 overall after being held to a .143 clip in the last set.
The Mavs never trailed in the first set but found themselves down 7-1 early in the second before roaring back to within 10-9. After two Eagle points, Martin took over the match recording four consecutive kills before a Johnson ace put the Mavs up 14-12.
The Mavs would never trail the set again, going on a 6-0 run with Leffler at the service line to win the set by eight. Freshman
Karsen Breeding, Leffler, Hunt and Tadlock all recorded kills in that stretch before one of Leffler's aces put it away.
The Mavs had to rally again in the third set and trailed 21-18 before fighting off a set point at 24-23 thanks to a Hunt and Tadlock block. Hunt then put down two match-clinching kills.
CMU will now return home or a single weekend home match, hosting Colorado Christian at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars are 11-7 overall and 5-3 in RMAC play heading into a Friday night match at Westminster.
