GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's swimming and diving team was selected first while the Maverick men were picked sixth in the October and initial 2024-25 season edition of the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America's Division II Top 25 dual meet poll, which was announced by the organization on Friday.
The Maverick women received 244 points in the polling of 11 CSCAA Division II member coaches who sit on the Division II Women's Poll Committee. The men's poll committee, also made up 11 members, combined to give the Mavericks 231 points.
The committees evaluate and ranks the nation's top 25 dual meet teams based on several factors. These include head-to-head dual meet results, performances since the last rankings, season-long achievements, dual meet records, roster changes (such as injuries), and data from the SwimCloud Simulator. It's important to note that the poll is not intended to predict top finishers in a championship meet format.
The Maverick women are coming off a second place finish at the 2024 NCAA Division II Championships and have posted a 3-3 dual meet record thus far in 2024-25, including a win over NCAA Division I and Big 12 Conference foe Utah as well as two convincing triumphs over Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rival CSU Pueblo. Those victories allowed the Mavs to extend their 9-year old RMAC dual meet winning streak to 36.
The Mavs also took on BYU during both days of the Intermountain Shootout on Sept 30 and Oct. 1.
Grand Valley State's women were picked second in the poll with 233 points, edging out defending national champion Nova Southeastern (231), which came in third. Drury (212) and Wingate (208) complete the top five.
Three other RMAC women's teams are in the top 25 with Simon Fraser coming in eight while Oklahoma Christin and the Colorado School of Mines checking in 23rd and 25th, respectively.
The Maverick men are also the first of four RMAC men's teams in the poll ahead of No. 13 Oklahoma Christian, No. 17 Simon Fraser and No. 23 Mines.
Drury topped the poll with 262 points ahead of Indianapolis (256), McKendree (250), Grand Valley State (243) and Tampa (235).
The Maverick men have finished fifth at the last two NCAA Division II Championships. They also competed against BYU and Utah during the Intermountain Shootout, posting their best ever effort against the Utes.
Both Maverick teams have won six straight RMAC titles and have been touted as favorites to win for the seventh straight crowns in the league's preseason polls, which were released earlier this week.
The Maverick squads will continue their seasons next Saturday (Oct. 26), when they host Division I Wyoming in a 1 p.m. dual in the El Pomar Natatorium.
The next version of the monthly CSCAA Poll is scheduled for Nov. 15.
