Mavs surge seven spots to 14th in National Poll

LEXINGTON, Ky.—  The Colorado Mesa University volleyball team moved up seven spots to 14th in this week's AVCA/TARAFLEX Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll, released by the American Volleyball Coaches Association on Monday afternoon.
 
The rise came after the Mavericks' 4-0 start at last weekend's Oredigger Volleyball Classic Presented by Courtyard and Residence Inn by Marriott in Golden, Colorado and is the Mavs' highest national ranking since the being ranked tenth in the 2021 preseason poll.  It is also the Mavs' highest in-season ranking since Nov. 17, 2004, when they were ranked seventh, excluding the 2021 spring season when a limited number of teams played.
 
The Mavs received 447 points in this week's polling of AVCA member coaches from around the country and the second of now three Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams in the poll.
 
MSU Denver is now ranked sixth with 907 points after going 3-1 against teams currently ranked in the top 25.  The Roadrunners were third in the preseason poll and are the only team in the current top 10 with a loss.
 
Regis is now ranked 19th after going 2-2 at the same Yotes Classic, hosted by now No. 9 Cal State San Bernardino, which surged ten spots while receiving two first place votes after going 4-0 in their tournament.
 
Defending NCAA Division II Champion West Texas A&M maintained the No. 1 spot with 41 first place votes and 1,152 total points while national runner-up Concordia St. Paul remained second with 1,125 points, aided by three first place votes.
 
Wayne State and Tampa each moved up a spot while St. Cloud State moved up two spots into fifth, giving the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference three teams in the top five.
 
Another NSIC member Minnesota Duluth is now seventh ahead of Missouri-St. Louis.  Nebraska-Kearney rounds out the top 10.
 
Preseason No. 22 Colorado School of Mines dropped out of the top 25 but is still in the others receiving votes category, which also includes Dallas Baptist, a team the Mavericks will close out this weekend's 2023 DoubleTree by Hilton Maverick Fall Classic, CMU's first early-season home tournament in 11 years.

The Mavs will also take on Cal Poly Humboldt on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. as well as Fresno Pacific and Sioux Falls on Friday at Noon at 7:30 p.m., respectively.
