Last Sunday, the CMU Women's Rugby team took on Utah State at home. Due to some unfortunate injuries in a tough Week 1 matchup, several Mavs took the pitch as a starter for the first time. While they were still trying to find their bearings, Utah State came out hot. Just five minutes into the matchup, USU moved the ball well and caught Mesa on their heels backed up against their Try line. Eventually USU touched down, just 5 minutes into the match.
That would be the first and only try for Utah State in a matchup that the score did not fully represent the effort needed. It took CMU merely three minutes to answer back as a speedy
Ellen Rickard shot the gap and tied the game up. A conversion by
Ryleigh Blatnik put the Mavs ahead and they did not look back.
Strong leadership and communication by the veteran core helped the Mavs work through the chaos of the lineup change. The Mavs moved the ball around as five different players scored and rookie freshmen Ashley Bollinger, got the first of her career. The name of the game was ball movement and pace. CMU worked hard at switching the field and making the ball do the work. The final score of the game was 62-5, making the Mavs record 2-0 so far this season.
The ladies head to Colorado Springs this weekend to take on the Air Force Academy. This tough matchup will take place Sunday Sept. 24th.
