Unbeaten Mavs sweep RMAC Awards for second time in three weeks

Spitzer, VanDeList, Waller all touted following weekend sweep

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— For the second time in three weeks, the Colorado Mesa University volleyball team swept the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors, which were announced by conference officials on Monday afternoon.

Redshirt senior middle hitter Savannah Spitzer was named as the Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week while redshirt junior Sabrina VanDeList and sophomore libero Allison Waller were named as the Setter and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively duplicating their Sept. 4 honors when the Mavs' Sydney Leffler received the offensive honor.

The accolades come after the Mavs continued their perfect 2023 season start with 3-set road sweeps of Western Colorado and Fort Lewis on Friday and Saturday.  They are now 10-0 overall and tied for the RMAC lead at 2-0 in conference play heading into a Tuesday night (6 p.m.) encounter at Westminster University in Salt Lake City.

Spitzer recorded 20 kills (3.33/set) and hit .486 in the two wins.  The Aurora, Colorado native, who now has four career RMAC Offensive Player of the Week honors, had eight kills without a hitting error, good for a .500 attack percentage in Friday's win at Western.  She then tallied 12 kills and a season-high seven blocks while hitting .476 in Saturday's win at Fort Lewis.  The Cherokee Trail High School product also tallied 25 total points (4.25/set) and averaged 1.33 blocks per set over the weekend.

VanDeList has now won 11 career RMAC Setter of the Week honors and tallied 68 assists (11.33/set), 18 digs (3.00/set), three service aces (0.50/set) and three blocks (0.50/set) over a milestone eclipsing weekend.

On Friday, the Severance, Colorado native and Fort Collins High School graduate, had a 36-assist, 11-dig double-double, her fourth in a row, while becoming the sixth Maverick in program history to eclipse the 3,000 career assist milestone.  VanDeList then tallied 32 assists, seven digs, two aces and two kills in Saturday's win over Fort Lewis and now has 3,044 career assists.

Meanwhile, Waller led the RMAC with her 6.00-dig per set average over the weekend, tallying a career-high 19 in the win over Western before tallying 17 more against Fort Lewis.  The Loveland, Colorado native and Berthoud High School product, also made just one reception error in 28 attempts, good for .964 reception percentage, as the Maverick defense held the Mountaineers and Skyhawks to a combined .086 hitting percentage.
