GOLDEN, Colo.— Sydney Leffler,
Sabrina VanDeList and
Allison Waller helped lead a balanced Colorado Mesa University effort as the Maverick volleyball team picked up their second straight 3-0 sweep of the day, this time over San Francisco State University on Friday evening here at the Colorado School of Mines' Lockridge Arena.
Leffler,
who had 21 kills earlier in the day against Pittsburg State, tallied 17 more in the 25-16, 25-21, 25-21 win over the Gators, now 1-1 on the day and at the Oredigger Volleyball Classic Presented by Courtyard and Residence Inn by Marriott. She also hit .312 while VanDeList tallied 41 assists for the second straight match. The redshirt junior and 2022 honorable mention all-American also tallied nine digs while leading the Mavs to a .298 team attack percentage.
Waller set a career-high for the second time of the day, registering 17 digs while being perfect on 18 reception attempts.
Meanwhile,
Riley Daugherty recorded 11 kills while defensive specialist
Jordan Woods also finished in double-figures with 12 digs.
Emma Shaddix, who had nine kills on .360 hitting, and
Savannah Spitzer, who put down eight balls while hitting .375 also contributed to the victory.
The Mavs, who have now gone 2-0 on the opening day of each of the last two and four of the last five seasons, trailed just one time throughout the match, while out-hitting the Gators by 121 points.
After recording seven kills in each set of the afternoon victory over the Gorillas, Leffler went one better in the opening set of the evening win over the Gators. The Mavs hit .457 as a team in the opening frame, jumping out to 8-2 and 13-5 leads. They led by at least six points throughout the rest of the set and won in it by nine.
The Mavs would also take a 7-2 lead early in the second frame although the Gators pulled their way back to tie at both 11 and 15 before the Mavs eventually seized control to win the set when Shaddix, freshman middle hitter
Nicole Martin and Daugherty all put down kills in the closing stages, which saw the Mavs win five of the final six points.
The Gators scored the first point of the third set to garner their lone set lead before the Mavs pulled out to a 5-2 lead. They would go on to extend the lead to 15-10 with Waller behind the service line and to as many as seven points at 18-11 on a Daugherty kill.
The Gators would chomp away at the lead and pulled within two at 21-19 and 23-1 on Tamiya Wilson kills before a hitting error and Shaddix kill finished off what was the Mavs' second consecutive 4-point set win.
The Mavs will continue their tournament weekend with two more matches on Saturday, playing against Findlay and Augustana at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively. Findlay went 2-0 on Friday while Augustana was 0-2.
