SERIES HISTORY
Colorado Mesa took all four games from the Colorado Christian Cougars back in March over on the Front Range at All Star Park. The game one win gave head coach Chris Hanks is 1,000th win of his career.
Over the years, the Mavericks are 90-11 all-time against Colorado Christian with the Cougars taking the series in 2022 for the first time in their program's history.
In the 101 games, the Mavericks have averaged nearly 12 runs per game with a home record of 45-4 in the series. They owned a 27 game win streak over Colorado Christian spanning from April of 2014 to March of 2018.
SCOUTING THE COUGARS
The Cougars boast two of the best power hitters in the conference in Jordan Medina and Gabe Ramos. The two combined for 28 doubles and 35 home runs in 49 games this season which was more than New Mexico Highlands and Adams State had as a team this season.
Medina finished the regular season at .360 with 17 doubles and 16 home runs while Ramos hit .374 with 11 doubles and 19 home runs.
Projected pitcher for Wednesday's games figures to be Jake Gimble. The senior went 6-5 with a 7.35 ERA in 60 innings pitched to lead the Cougars. Gimble lasted three innings in his last matchup with CMU.
KNOCKING ON HISTORY'S DOOR
Colorado Mesa outfielder Julian Boyd accomplished only one other person in Maverick program history accomplished in the 66 years of baseball. Boyd now has 20 doubles, 10 home runs and 33 stolen bases to become the second-ever to reach 10 home runs, 20 doubles and 33 stolen bases in a season.
The only person to accomplish the feat was 2014 ABCA National Player of the Year Austin Kaiser. During that season, Kaiser batted .478 with 24 doubles, 11 home runs and 30 stolen bases on his way to earning the top accolades.
Only one other player came close to accomplishing the feat. In 1992, Johnny Bess finished the season with 19 doubles, 10 home runs and 34 stolen bases.
No one has ever stolen 40 bases in a season at Colorado Mesa.
MORE JUICE PLEASE
Boyd is just three stolen bases away from tying the single season stolen base record at Colorado Mesa. The senior is 33-for-37 on the season in stolen bases and is a threat anytime he reaches base.
The stolen base record has stood since the 2004 season when Trask Munoz took 36 bases.
The Los Angeles native went on to earn RMAC Player of the Week honors in the last week of the regular season for swiping five bases against Adams State.
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE NO. 1
Colorado Mesa rose to the No. 1 ranking in this week's Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll for the first time this season and for the first time since May 17, 2021 when the Mavericks entered the NCAA South Central Regional as the top-ranked team in the country.
It was the fourth time in program history the Mavericks ascended to the top of the rankings but have been featured as the No. 1 team in 17 polls which includes yesterday's release.
40 PIECE
The Mavericks eclipsed the 40-win plateau for the 10th straight season this past weekend and this year was able to accomplish it during the regular season as they finished with a 41-9 record. Colorado Mesa won 32 of their past 35 games to close the season.
It is the 16th time in head Coach Chris Hanks' tenure that the Mavericks have reached the 40-win mark.
ROHM AROUND THE WORLD
Senior pitcher Blake Rohm was named the RMAC Pitcher of the Week in the last week of the regular season after closing the regular season with his first win of the season against Adams State.
The senior recorded season-highs for innings pitched and strikeouts as he allowed one run (unearned) on six hits, walked one and struck out six in 79 pitches.
He is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA in 11 innings pitched this season.
