PUEBLO, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University's
Zace Buckhold and
Josie Coffey both had 1-centimeter improvements to their NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying season-best marks, highlights of the day for a group of Maverick track and field athletes at Saturday's CSU Pueblo Last Chance Invitational.
Buckhold set a career-best mark of 14.86 meters (48 feet, 9 inches) to win the triple jump while Coffey cleared a season-best 1.72 meters (5-7.75).
Buckhold came into the weekend ranked 27
th on the national performance list and is now tied for 26
th while Coffey is now tied for tenth on the national list after three other athletes from around the country moved ahead of her in recent meets.
Although those two efforts were the only improved NCAA qualifying marks, several other Mavericks turned in strong performances.
Jordan Brockman jumped 5.63 meters (18-5.75) in the long jump, just one centimeter off her PR, and placed second.
Meanwhile, Buckhold was one of four Maverick men to win an event. High jumper
Eddie Kurjak matched his NCAA provisional qualifying high jump of 2.05 meters (6-8.75) while
Justin Thompson took the long jump with a leap of 7.18 meters (23-6.75).
On the track,
Kelsey Montague also shaved 0.03 seconds off his PR in the 400-meter hurdles, winning that race in 54.32 seconds.
The Mavs plan on sending athletes to three other last chance meets next weekend.
