GOLDEN, Colo.— In what was their first efforts of the outdoor season, Colorado Mesa University's
Zayden Davis and
Dayne Ortega both won their respective events to qualify for next week's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday here at the Colorado School of Mines' Stermole Track & Field Complex.
The duo were the only two Mavericks competing in the Mines Mini Meet and took advantage of their one and only qualifying opportunity.
Davis, the defending RMAC Champion in the 110-meter hurdles clocked a time of 14.82 seconds while Ortega posted a time of 50.11 to best a field of 12 in the 400 meters, an event in which he placed fourth in at last year's RMAC Outdoor Championships before taking second in the discipline at the 2023 indoor championships.
Ortega now ranks 20
th on the RMAC performance list with an altitude-adjusted time of 50.22.
Davis ranks sixth in the hurdles with his converted time of 14.86.
The top 24 declared athletes in each event after this weekend will qualify for the RMAC Championships, which begin next Friday (Apr. 28) in Chadron, Nebraska.
