GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's triathlon team will race for the only time this spring when they head to Spearfish, South Dakota to contest the Black Hills Tri-Fest on Sunday on and around the Black Hills State University campus.
The Mavericks will send four women in
Shannon Feran,
Fiona Graves,
Ashlyn Hicken and
Torin Lackmann to compete in the 9 a.m. collegiate race against triathletes from Cal Poly-Humboldt, MSU Billings and the host Yellow Jacket squad. CMU men's club team members Alex Linenberger and Doyle Young will then race in the open division wave, which will get underway at 10 a.m.
The race format includes a 500-meter pool swim in the Young Center pool on campus followed by a 25-kilometer bike and 5K run on city and county roads. Participants will then finish the race on the track at the Yellow Jackets' Lyle Hare Stadium.
The top three finishers for each team will count for the team score while others will displace scorers from other teams.
In the fall, the Mavericks used seven all-America performances to take second in the Division II portion of the Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championships after winning their fourth consecutive West Regional qualifier.
Black Hills State was second behind the Mavs in the regional qualifier and took fifth at the national championships. MSU Billings was tenth while Cal Poly Humboldt rounded out the team standings in 12
th place.
