AZUSA, Calif.— Julianna Campos and
Paige Furin completed a 3-0 weekend of doubles wins while Furin and
Macy Richards took their singles matches to three sets, leading the Colorado Mesa University Maverick effort against 15
th-ranked Azusa Pacific University on Saturday here at the Cougars Mason & Bavougian Tennis Complex.
However, the Cougars won the dual 7-0 to improve to 8-2 on the year while the Mavericks fell to 4-8.
Campos and Furin won their No. 3 doubles match, 6-1 over the Cougars' Vini Bautista and Shannele Lopez. Furin also won the first set of her No. 6 singles match over Katia Betancourt, 6-4 before the Cougar senior won the second set, 6-3 before taking the super-tiebreaker, 10-4.
Richard also claimed the first set of her No. 3 singles match over Bautista, who rallied for a 6-4 second-set win. She then won the tie-breaker, 10-6.
The Cougars had nationally-ranked players at the top of their lineup as Eleonara Liga, ranked fifth defeated
Makenna Livingston, 6-3, 6-2 in the top flight while No. 34 April Wong was a 6-1, 6-2 victor over
Issy Coman at No. 2 singles. Liga and Madison Kane, ranked third in the country in doubles, also posted a 6-2 win over Livingston and Coman in the top doubles flight as the Cougars took the early momentum en-route to the victory.
CMU's
Kristen Thomas and
Delia Maier also won a 6-2 exhibition doubles win while Maier had an exhibition singles win as well.
The Mavericks will take a break from Pacific West Conference play next week but will take on Division I Utah Tech in a doubleheader next Saturday (Mar. 11) in St. George, Utah.
