ST. GEORGE, Utah— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team won each of the final five singles matches as they came from behind to claim a 5-2 road win over an NCAA Division I opponent in the Utah Tech Trailblazers on Sunday.
The two teams then started their second scheduled dual, which ended up being rained out with just one doubles match completed.
Sunday's win snapped the Mavs' 3-match slide and allowed them to improve to 5-8 on the season. They have now won three straight over the Trailblazers (0-10).
After dropping all three doubles matches and the No. 3 singles match, the Mavs trailed 2-0.
However,
Makenna Livingston and
Julianna Campos claimed straight-set wins at No. 1 and 5 singles to tie the score.
Issy Coman,
Halle Romero and
Paige Furin then all won 3-set matches in the other flights to complete the comeback.
Livingston was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over the Trailblazers' No. 1 Rachel Mellor while Campos was a 6-3, 6-1 victor over Alysha Damron at No. 5.
Romero then gave the Mavs an overall lead with a 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 win over Annmiek Sterk at No. 4 singles before
Paige Furin clinched the team victory, winning in three sets over Raquel Roshak at No. 6. Furin dropped the opening-set tie-breaker, 7-1, but rolled over Roshak in the second and third sets, decided by 6-3 and 6-0 scores, respectively.
Coman then completed her 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Ya-Chi Hsu at No. 2 singles to punctuate the win.
The Mavericks will return to Pacific West Conference play on Saturday, when they start a stretch of four duals in as many days in Fresno, California. They begin the stretch against Holy Names and will also play Academy of Art, Dominican in neutral-court matches before finishing the trip on Mar. 21 at Fresno Pacific.
