GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa had a strong defensive effort, but only shot 31 percent from the floor and were outrebounded by 13 in a 64-53 loss to Colorado School of Mines in the semi-finals of the RMAC Tournament.
The Mavericks now will try to replicate their path from last season, when the Mavs were upset in the RMAC Tournament semis by Regis but recovered to win twice and advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, the farthest they have gone in program history.
Blaise Threatt continued his incredible scoring run with another 25-point night, but with none of CMU's looks falling, the only other Maverick to score over five points was
Reece Johnson with 13.
Utilizing their size and length advantages, Mines effectively clogged the paint and dominated the glass. The Orediggers grabbed 10 offensive rebounds in the first half alone and then held CMU without a point for the first 8:55 of the second half. The visitors ended the game with 43 rebounds to CMU's 30 and blocked five shots while CMU did not register a block.
The Mavericks played well on defense, holding Mines nearly 20 points under its season average of 82 points per game. The Orediggers shot 40.8 percent from the field and 34 percent from three, and they entered the contest averaging 50 percent from the field and 37 percent from deep.
Threatt scored over 20 points for the fifth consecutive game and also led the team in assists (five) and rebounds (six). He shot 8 of 19 from the floor. Johnson made three of CMU's six three-pointers to reach his 13.
The loss snaps dual 10-game overall and 10-game home winning streaks for the Mavs, who now will await their seeding and destination on Selection Sunday. While a loss at this stage of the conference tournament removes any possibility of the Mavericks landing a top seed or hosting the regional, the Mavericks are widely considered a lock to qualify for the Tournament, likely as one of the middle seeds.
