CANYON, Tex. – Colorado Mesa's season came to an end Saturday with a 72-57 loss to fourth-seed Angelo State in the First United Bank Center in Canyon, Texas.
Trevor Baskin led the way with 16 points on 8 of 9 shooting while
Blaise Threatt finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and three steals in the loss.
The Mavericks were stymied by Angelo State's elite defense, which held the Mavs well under their season averages to 47 percent from the field and 27 percent from three. CMU didn't do itself any favors by only going 3-for-12 as a team from the free throw line.
Angelo State came out in a groove offensively, making 6 of 12 three-pointers in the first half. The Mavericks took an early 7-2 lead with four points from Threatt and an
Isaac Jessup three that led to an ASU timeout and six consecutive points from Baskin put CMU up 13-7 with six minutes gone in the game.
However, Angelo State ripped off an 8-0 run to take the lead at 15-13, which they would hold for the remainder of the game. A further 10-2 run, culminated by a dunk and a pair of three-pointers, allowed the Rams to open up a 10-point lead at 25-15.
Colorado Mesa found itself down 15 points at halftime, which ended up being the final margin as both teams scored 31 points in the second half. The Mavericks made half of their field goal attempts and held Angelo to 32 percent shooting after halftime, but crucially, the Rams went 13 of 14 from the line in the second half while the Mavs only sunk 2 of 8.
Although the season comes to an end at this stage, the Mavericks' 25 wins are still the second-most in program history behind the 2021-22 squad and CMU's active streak of making four consecutive NCAA Tournaments is the longest in program history.
Angelo State will advance to face top-seeded West Texas A&M in the regional semifinals. A pair of RMAC schools will battle in the other semifinal, as Fort Lewis takes on Black Hills State.
