Mavs Launch Florida Trip With Win

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Led by yet another five goals from Jed Brummett, Colorado Mesa blitzed the net with 17 goals in the first three quarters to record its second consecutive win over a ranked opponent by beating Florida Tech 20-14.

The win moves the No. 15 Mavericks to 8-1 on the season ahead of a huge showdown with No. 5 Tampa, the defending national champions, on Monday.

In addition to Brummett, James Steinke, Philip Petersen, AJ Switzer and Alex Blatt all had multiple goals for the Mavs. Trey Corkin III led CMU with nine ground balls and five caused turnovers while Calvin Doucette recorded 11 saves, his second straight game with 10 or more.

The Mavericks jumped on Florida Tech early, with Jed Brummett finding the net just 16 seconds into the match. After the Panthers answered with a pair of goals, Brummett, Hunter Holcomb and Alex Blatt scored three for CMU in a 90-second span to make it 4-2, with Blatt, Drew Eickelman and Sergio Pelayo chipping in assists.

The teams continued to battle back and forth, with CMU never trailing but never leading by more than two until the final minutes of the second quarter. After Florida Tech scored to make it 8-7 with 5:59 to go in the first half, Drew Eickelman answered just nine seconds later with a goal. An extra man opportunity allowed Brummett to net his fourth with 2:37 left and Sergio Pelayo tallied from AJ Switzer to make it 11-7 with under a minute until halftime.

Counter to the back-and-forth nature of the first half, the second half featured runs from both teams. The Mavericks ran the lead past five when after Jed Brummett's fifth goal was canceled out by a man up goal for Florida Tech, JJ Brummett, AJ Switzer and Alex Blatt all scored within a 70-second span for CMU to make it 15-9. The Mavericks continued to run up the score and led 19-10 once Trey Corkin III buried an extra man opportunity when the fourth quarter was less than a minute old.

The Panthers closed the gap somewhat with four straight goals, but Philip Petersen put a bow on things with a goal  from Levi McCoy with 1:05 remaining to lift the Mavericks past the 20-goal barrier for the third time this season.

The spirited contest featured 10 penalties, five for each team, that led to three extra-man goals for CMU and two for Florida Tech. In what has long been a theme for the Mavs, CMU dominated in the faceoff circle, with Dylan Checketts' 21-11 record helping the Mavs win the battle 25-13 overall.

Colorado Mesa outshot the Panthers 50-36, with 42 of those attempts coming in the first three quarters.

Next up for CMU is a Monday night game against the University of Tampa. The No. 5 Spartans are 6-1, a year removed from going 21-0 en route to a national championship. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. MT.
