The host Concordia Golden Eagles plated one in the first and one in the sixth to defeat Colorado Mesa 2-0 in game three of the Concordia Kickoff Classic. There were only seven total hits in the game.
The Golden Eagles scored a run in the first after a one out double and a two-out single plated a run while their run in the sixth came after a pair of Maverick infield miscues led to the other.
The Mavericks had opportunities in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth,
Brandi Haller led off with a double but was caught in-between second and third and was thrown out diving back into second.
In the sixth with one out, the
Myah Arrieta reached on an error followed by a power bunt single by
Sarah Jorissen. After a strike out,
Aislyn Sharp laced a two-hopper into the hole but the Golden Eagle was able to snare it and flip it to third for the final out of the inning to thwart the threat.
Hannah Sattler took the tough luck loss for the Mavericks to fall to 1-1 on the season. Sattler allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, walked one and struck out two.
Dominican 2, Colorado Mesa 0
The Maverick bats were silent again as the two teams combined for two runs on four hits in the game but the Penguins were able to benefit from five Maverick errors in a 2-0 game.
Both Maverick's hits came off bunts by
Myah Arrieta and
Iliana Mendoza.
Colorado Mesa threatened in the bottom of the third inning after freshman
Olivia Litzen leadoff the inning with a walk followed by Mendoza's bunt single. A fly out and a strikeout later,
Sarah Jorissen walked to load the bases with two outs, but a strikeout stalled the threat.
Colorado Mesa struck out 14 times in the game while both of Domincan's run were unearned.
The combination of
Kennedy Vis and
Hannah Sattler allowed two runs (both unearned) on two hits, walked one and struck out four.
Colorado Mesa will close out the opening weekend with a matchup against San Francisco State at 10:30am tomorrow morning.
