Threatt's Career High Carries Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.Blaise Threatt scored a career-high 30 points on 11 of 14 shooting as Colorado Mesa made it 12 wins in its last 13 games with an 88-64 win over Regis.

Threatt and the rest of the Mavericks were potent and precise on the offensive end, shooting 62 percent from the game and 71 percent in the second half. The Mavs got to the basket at will, pounding the Rangers for 56 points in the paint.

Owen Koonce came off the bench to score 14 points, tying a season high, while Isaac Jessup and Trevor Baskin each had 11. Baskin, Reece Johnson and Christopher Speller each finished with a team-high four rebounds, the low total due to both teams shooting above 50 percent from the field.

Regis was competitive early on and grabbed brief leads of 3-2, 5-4 and 16-15, but an important series of plays turned the tide. Isaac Jessup hit a three-pointer, giving CMU an 18-16 lead, then came up with a steal on the ensuing Rangers possession and fired an outlet pass to Reece Johnson. Unfazed by a backtracking defender in his path, Johnson leapt and slammed down a one-handed poster dunk for the bucket and the foul, sending Brownson Arena into a frenzy.

Johnson converted the free throw to make it a three-point play and suddenly, CMU was six points into an 18-3 run that lasted up until the under-four media timeout. The Mavs scored their final eight points of the first half in the paint and Threatt closed out the half by putting back his own miss to lead all scorers with 15 points and CMU up 41-27.

The Rangers had no defensive answer for Threatt, who drove the lanes for layup after layup but also went a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc when the defense tried to clog things up inside. The redshirt sophomore guard made all five of his field goal attempts in the second half and everything he threw up went in – including a wild, driving layup where Threatt was fouled but managed to get off a no-look floater from behind his head that went off the glass and in.

As the CMU starters began to play more sparingly in the second half, Owen Koonce got hot and scored 11 of his 14 in the second half on 5 of 6 shooting, including six straight points in a two-minute span. Christopher Speller was excellent both in relief of and alongside Threatt, making all three field goal attempts and adding four rebounds, an assist, a steal and a season-high two blocks. Eric Pollert also recorded his second basket of the season on a reverse layup with under a minute left.

The win puts the Mavericks at 17-4 overall and 12-3 in the RMAC. Colorado School of Mines lost to consensus No. 3 Black Hills State, bringing the Orediggers within half a game of the Mavericks ahead of their showdown next week.

Two milestones are within reach Saturday night for members of the CMU program. Blaise Threatt will enter the game four points away from reaching 1,000 in his career. He will become the 19th Maverick in program history to cross that barrier. Also, should the Mavs win Saturday night, head coach Mike DeGeorge will reach 300 career wins across his four collegiate head coaching stops. DeGeorge recently tallied his 100th win at CMU.

Saturday night's game against UCCS is the Blizzard in Brownson Presented by Coca-Cola. Fans are encouraged to wear white to create a blizzard in the stands while the game itself will be filled with giveaways, games and prizes, as well as a scholarship check presented to four CMU student-athletes at halftime. Tip-off of the men's game will be at approximately 7:30 p.m. after the women's game.
