MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Colorado Mesa rode the Brummett brothers to a road win over the University of Mount Olive, as JJ and Jed combined to score seven goals in a 19-8 CMU victory.
JJ, the youngest of three Brummetts to suit up for CMU lacrosse (and youngest of two on this year's roster) scored a career-high four goals, which all came in a 17-minute span from the final minute of the first quarter to the first minute of the third quarter. It was more of the same offensively for Jed, who scored three goals to up his team-leading total to 17 on the season, 10 more than any other Maverick.
The win ensures a 2-1 North Carolina road trip for the No. 19-ranked Mavericks, who went 1-1 against a pair of schools receiving votes in the USILA Top 20 Poll in Belmont Abbey and Mount Olive. The Mavs are 3-1 on the season heading into a pair of games in Kansas City this weekend.
Colorado Mesa outshot the hosts 68-29, including a 44-13 advantage in shots on goal. The Mavericks won the face-off battle 20-9 and picked up 38 ground balls to Mount Olive's 23. The Mavericks also went a perfect 26-for-26 on clears during the game while Mount Olive went only 24-for-30.
The Mavericks got out to a 4-1 lead through the first quarter thanks to a pair of goals from
Jed Brummett and tallies from
JJ Brummett and
AJ Switzer. A high-octane second quarter saw each team find the net five times in the period, with one of CMU's goals and three of Mount Olive's coming on extra man opportunities thanks to five combined penalties in the quarter.
The Mavs took control in the third quarter, shutting out UMO while finding the net three times themselves on goals from
Philip Petersen and each of the Brummett brothers. CMU would outscore Mount Olive 7-2 in the final quarter to steadily put the game out of reach.
James Steinke scored once in the second and twice in the fourth for his first hat trick of the season.
Philip Petersen, Switzer and
Hunter Holcomb all scored twice with
Drew Eickelman,
Trey Corkin III and
Levi McCoy scoring once. Eickelman had two assists to tie Steinke for the team lead with seven this season.
Up next, the Mavericks conclude their five-game road trip by heading to Missouri to take on former RMAC foe Rockhurst at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 3. Rockhurst will be the third consecutive Mavs opponent that is receiving votes in the national poll. Following that, CMU will face Quincy at 9 a.m. on Saturday in a neutral-site game played at Rockhurst's field.
