GLENDALE, Ariz.— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks dominated Arizona Christian University, 7-0 to salvage a Friday women's tennis split.
The Mavericks, now 3-5 on the season, won every set against the NAIA's Firestorm here at the Paseo Racquet Center after falling 4-3 in a tight battle against long-time NCAA Division II rival Western New Mexico University earlier in the day at the Phoenix Tennis Center.
Julianna Campos and
Paige Furin both went 3-1 throughout the day to lead the Mavericks while
Makenna Livingston and
Macy Richards were both 2-1 and led their unfinished doubles match against ACU's top duo.
In the victory over the Firestorm (1-2), the Mavericks swept the earlier two doubles matches as
Halle Romero and
Paige Furin claimed a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles before Campos and
Kristen Thomas were 6-3 winners in the third flight.
The Mavs then swept the six singles matches dropping just 19 combined games in the straight-set wins.
Campos, Furin and Thomas were the most dominant in the bottom half of the order as Campos defeated Kendra Farrell, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles while Furin and Thomas were 6-0, 6-1 winners over Emma Troyer and Halle Stork in the fifth and sixth flights, respectively.
Meanwhile, Livingston comfortably knocked off Deondra Bacchus, ranked 13th in the ITA's NAIA West Region Rankings, 6-0, 6-3 while
Macy Richards got by regional No. 14, Vittoria Quadri, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 singles.
Romero was also a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Karla Grobbelaar at No. 3 singles during the sweep.
In the earlier match dual, WNMU, the Mavs took a 2-1 lead as Livingston and Richards delivered wins over Jenny Larsson and Willemijn Van Mierlo, respectively.
However, the Mustangs, now 4-0 on the young season, answered back with wins at No. 6 and 3 singles before Campos tied the score, with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Massiel Paredes.
Mann-Ning Li then scored the dual-clincher, winning 7-5, 6-1 over Furin at No. 5 singles.
Romero and Furin also won, 6-4 in doubles over Larsson and Paredes at No. 2.
The Mavericks will take on Arizona Christian again on Saturday in their third and final dual of the weekend.
