Women's Tennis Wins and Loses 7-0

Colorado Mesa women's tennis found themselves on both sides of a 7-0 score on Friday, losing by that amount to Nebraska-Kearney before beating Hastings by that margin at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center to open the spring 2023 tennis season.

The 1-1 day puts CMU's record at 2-3 after the Mavs went 1-2 during the fall.

Hosting in its brand-new indoor facility, Nebraska-Kearney started fast in both portions of the duel. Nebraska-Kearney earned the doubles point with a pair of 6-1 victories, then clinched things with three singles matches that quickly wrapped up with the Mavs only taking four games.

Two singles matches went to tiebreakers. On court one, UNK's Melisa Becerra pulled out a narrow 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9) win over Colorado Mesa's Makenna Livingston. Kristen Thomas also forced a tiebreaker on court six, eventually falling to UNK's Merci Hood 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5).

Now 8-0 with the win over CMU, Nebraska-Kearney is receiving votes nationally as a team and had three regionally-ranked singles players as well as a regionally-ranked doubles team.

The Mavs rebounded later in the day and took out any frustrations they may have had on Hastings, an NAIA school in Hastings, Nebraska.

The CMU No. 3 doubles pairing of Julianna Campos and Kristen Thomas won 6-0 over Emma Markle and Maddie Ketcham. Moments later, the No. 1 pairing of Livingston and Macy Richards also won 6-0 over Theresa Price and Paige Willcoxon to clinch a 1-0 lead for the Mavericks. The duo of Halle Romero and Paige Furin defeated Sasha Richards and Samantha Worthington 6-4 to make things a clean sweep.

The Mavericks were nearly flawless during singles play, with Hastings only winning six games combined across the six singles matches. Furin kicked things off with a 6-0, 6-0 win on No. 3 over Worthington while Kristen Thomas on No. 4 and Delia Maier on No. 5 also earned the double bagel.

Also for CMU, Macy Richards defeated Price 6-1, 6-0 on court one and Julianna Campos pulled out a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Sasha Richards. Despite dropping games, Macy Richards and Campos wrapped up their victories before Thomas and Maier finished their 6-0, 6-0 matches. Jane Steur defeated Jenna Davison 6-1, 6-0 on six to seal the sweep.

The Mavericks have another test coming up on Saturday, facing another program receiving votes nationally in Augustana. That match will begin at 10:30 a.m. (MT).
