Despite creating a few scares, particularly in doubles, Colorado Mesa lost a 5-0 dual to an Augustana program that was receiving votes nationally. Two singles matches were unfinished.
Augustana's No. 1 doubles team of Senem Ocal and Flore Hadjigeorgiou were ranked No. 11 in the country, with some polls having them as high as third. They were pushed to the limit by CMU's top team of
Makenna Livingston and
Macy Richards, with Augustana gutting out a 7-6 (7-5) victory.
The Vikings had already clinched the doubles point, however, with Aleksandr Kistanova and Gabriela Jancikova defeating CMU's
Halle Romero and
Paige Furin on court two and the Augustana duo of Laura Arce Vieyra and Emily Granson beating the Mavs' duo of
Julianna Campos and
Kristen Thomas on court three, both by 6-2 scores.
Augustana continued to shine in singles. A seemingly high-profile match-up between Livingston and Hadjigeorgiou on court one became the first match to finish, with Hadjigeorgiou collecting a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Soon after, Arce Vieyra finished off Campos by a 6-0, 6-3 margin.
Jancikova's 6-2, 6-2 victory over Thomas officially clinched the duel for Augustana, and the Vikings picked up another point when Ocal topped Richards on court two, 6-4, 6-1, and the dual was called.
Unsurprisingly, the Mavericks were faring better in the two matches that were taking longer to sort out. On court five,
Paige Furin was leading Margarita Chouliara 6-0, 3-5 when play was stopped.
Halle Romero was a game away from sending things to a tiebreak on court three, but Kistanova was ahead 6-3, 2-5 for Augustana.
The Mavericks are now 2-4 overall, finishing 1-2 on their trip to Kearney, Nebraska. The team will be back in action next weekend at the Phoenix Duals, facing Western New Mexico and Arizona Christian on Friday and Ottawa University Arizona on Saturday from Glendale, Arizona.
