HAYS, Kan. – The Colorado Mesa women's wrestling sent a smaller group of wrestlers to the Bob Smith Open, hosted by Fort Hays State University, on Sunday (Dec. 3) morning. The Mavericks had a total of 12 wrestlers finish in the top six of their respective weight classes and four of those claimed championships.
Isabella Morales (101),
Adriana Gomez (109),
Kiely Tabaldo (116) and
Celina Cooke (155) all took first-place in their weight classes.
Morales earned a pair of pins within the first 50 seconds of her first two matches en route to reaching the finals. She then defeated Odelia Lopez of Schreiner 2-0 to claim the title and remained perfect against Lopez in her career.
Adriana Gomez took a similar route as her teammate on the way to the title at 109 pounds. Gomez earned a pair of pins in her first and second matches of the day before running into her teammate in the final. The Laveen, Ariz. native earned a 10-0 technical fall win over her teammate
Isabella Cruz for the championship.
Cruz also picked up a pair of victories by pin before falling to her teammate in the final.
Freshman
Kiely Tabaldo got back on the mat for the first time in a month and didn't disappoint. She reached the final at 116 pounds after three straight 10-0 technical fall wins before earning a 7-1 over unattached wrestler Lindsey Lopez in the championship bout. Tabaldo is now 6-0 on the season and ranked No. 10 at 116 pounds.
Sophomore
Celina Cooke continued her strong start to the season and added Bob Smith Open Champion at 155 pounds to her resume. Cooke opened the day with an 11-0 technical fall win followed by a pin at 1:14 in the semifinals. She closed the day out with a 7-7 criteria victory over Azana King of Schreiner in the title bout.
Kaydence Boyd (130),
Apple Middleton (136) and
Shandiin Largo (191) all reached the championship bout of their respective weight class before falling in the finals.
Boyd reached the final at 130 pounds before falling narrowly in the final 4-3 to Lexy Basurto of Schreiner while Middleton ran into a buzzsaw in Fort Hays State's Piper Cadden in the 136-pound final.
Shandiin Largo fell in a hotly contested 191-pound final and fell 8-7 to Samyra Thomas of Jarvis Christian.
Alyssa Jackson dropped her first match at 130 pounds and came all the way back through to take third while
Jennifer Curtin claimed third in a round robin at 170 pounds.
Valerie Glenn placed fourth at 143 pounds while Kim Carlin took home fifth place at 155 pounds.
Colorado Mesa will look to stay unbeaten in duals this week as they head to Alamosa this week for a triangular with Adams State and Texas Woman's on Thursday December 7.
