MARSHALL, Mo. – The No. 4 Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team wrapped up competition at the Missouri Valley Open on Saturday (Nov. 18) morning. The Mavericks finished the tournament with three placers and gained valuable mat experience for several of their younger competitiors.
 
Isabeau Shalack was the Mavericks highest finisher on the weekend as she was the runner-up at 235-pounds, a weight not sanctioned by the NCAA but is by the NAIA and NJCAA. Shalack reached the final before falling in a close match 5-2 to Samantha Calkins of Iowa. Despite the setback, she is 3-1 on the season after completion of her first tournament of the year.
 
In her semifinal, the Evergreen Park, Ill. native wasted no time with Payton Sholander of Wayland Baptist as she pinned her in 1:18.
 
At 101 pounds, Isabella Morales defeated Audalie Cruz of Wayland Baptist 8-1 to guarantee a top-8 finish. In her next match, she fell in a tight contest to Abbeygael Cabaug of Vanguard, 8-5 to wind up in the seventh-place match.
 
Morales fell in the seventh-place match to Juliana Alejandro of Tiffin 4-2 to finish in eighth place.
 
Freshman Adriana Gomez guaranteed a top-8 finish on the day when she defeated Ahsia Torres of Sacred Heart by tech fall 12-0. Torres entered the match ranked No. 10 in the most recent NWCA rankings while Gomez checked in at No. 9. In her next match, Gomez fell for the second time in the tournament to Southern Oregon's Natalie Reyna, this time by a 4-3 margin.
 
Gomez defeated Kylee Slyter of Baker University 10-8 to finish in seventh place in the tournament.
 
Colorado Mesa will be back in action after the Thanksgiving break as they will send a select group to the Bob Smith Open in Hays, Kan.
