MARSHALL, Mo. – The Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team opened competition at one of the largest women's collegiate tournaments in the country in the Missouri Valley Open on Friday (Nov. 17) afternoon. A total of 52 teams are entered with a grand total of 460 wrestlers competing.
Isabella Morales reached the quarterfinals at 101 pounds before falling to Stefana Jelacic of Lourdes by pin. Morales reached the quarters after pinning Rachel Cotter of William Penn at 2:41 and will face Audalie Cruz of Wayland Baptist with a spot in the top eight on the line.
At 109 pounds,
Adriana Gomez lost in the second round to Southern Oregon's Natalie Reyna in a hard-fought battle against a veteran wrestler in Reyna. The freshman bounced back with a pair of wins with one coming over her teammate
Isabella Cruz (TF 10-0) and the other by injury default at the 1:24 mark over Lydia Cruz of Grand View.
Gomez will take on Ahsia Torres of Sacred Heart with a podium finish on the line tomorrow morning.
Redshirt junior
Anja Tschohl opened her tournament at 123 pounds with a pair of wins to advance to the quarterfinals. Tschohl defeated Celeste Tellez of York by a 10-0 technical fall win followed by a pin at 2:36 Josie Davis of Campbellsville. The Andover, Kan. native fell in the quarters by a 15-4 technical fall by Shelby Moore of McKendree.
Tschohl will face the winner of Angelique Norman of Ottawa and Julia Vidalion of McKendree for a spot in the top eight.
Freshman
Valerie Glenn went 4-1 on the day at 136 pounds and is still alive at the weight. She will take on River Todd of Vanguard and will need to win two matches to finish in the top eight.
Glenn finished the day with wins over Doane College, Baker University, Lourdes, and one of her teammates by way of two decisions, a fall and a technical fall.
At 155 pounds,
Celina Cooke won her first three matches of the day before dropping her quarterfinals match. She defeated Lisa Hoeflich of Hastings by decision followed by a pin at 1:41 of Rylee Hinton of Westminster. Cooke defeated Kirsten Bruegel of Avila at 1:53 to advance to the quarterfinals where she fell to Sacred Heart's Madison Sandquist by tech fall.
Cooke will face the winner of Leilani Rodriguez of Grand View and unattached wrestler Tayden Khamjoi for a spot on the podium.
Shandin Largo had a solid day going 2-1 and is still alive at 191 pounds. Largo defeated Tylah Allen of Missouri Valley by tech fall 10-0 before falling Elisa Robinson of Baker by tech fall. She closed out the day with a 10-0 tech fall win over Gwendalyn Canney of Central College.
Largo will need to win a pair of matches to reach the top eight and will start out with a match against Kali Butts of Grand View.
Isabeau Shalack is the lone Maverick that is into the semifinals in the 235-pound weight class. Shalack defeated Jada Meredith of Avila by pin at 1:34 before a quarterfinal win over Martha Vizcarra of Baker University by fall at 1:09.
The redshirt sophomore will take on Payton Sholander of Wayland Baptist with a spot in the finals on the line.
Kaydence Boyd had a solid day before being bounced from the tournament at 130 pounds. Boyd, a freshman went 3-2 at the weight after falling in her first match as she rattled off three straight wins with two coming by fall and the third by a 4-1 decision. She fell in her final match by fall to an opponent from Central Methodist.
The 'blood' round begins tomorrow at 8am mountain.
