GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University triathlon team and six of its' members were recognized by the College Triathlon Coaches Association, which recently released its annual Scholar All-American teams.
The Mavericks qualified for the team award after posting a 3.46 team GPA in the fall of 2022, well above the 3.2 qualification criteria. The Mavs have now earned the award in three straight years.
Additionally, the Mavericks have five first team and six total CTCA Scholar All-Americans, the most of any Division II institution/overall.
The Mavericks' first team selections were
Shannon Feran,
Torin Lackmann,
Nadine Klive,
Natalie Mitchell and
Paloma Suarez Davila.
Josie Williams was an honorable mention pick.
To be eligible for first team status, student-athletes must have posted a 3.50 or higher GPA during the fall semester and finished in the top 20 individuals in their division at the Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championships. Honorable mention selections must also meet that GPA requirement and compete at the national championships, finishing outside the top 20.
Feran, who earned the bronze medal at the national championships, posted a perfect 4.0 GPA and has now earned the individual CTCA Scholar All-American in three successive years. Suarez was also a first team pick last year as a freshman while Mitchell has now been recognized in three straight seasons, including her 2021 honorable mention honor.
The Mavs, under the direction of first-year head coach
Jen Mathe, took second as a team at the national championships in Tempe, Arizona. All seven Mavericks who competed earned first team, second team or honorable mention all-America status by finishing amongst the top 21 finishers.
