GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa's 10-game winning streak came crashing down in Salt Lake City on Tuesday night, as the Mavs fell 70-63 to Westminster.
Despite the loss,
Blaise Threatt led all scorers with 24 points,
Reece Johnson had a season-high 17 points and
Trevor Baskin contributed 10 rebounds and three blocks.
The law of averages seemed to catch up to the Mavericks' shooting, as the team shot 41.9 percent from the field after exceeding 50 percent in nine of the previous 11 games. The Mavs were also 2-for-7 from the free throw line as a team, which included missing 6 of 7 in the game's final four minutes.
The Mavericks were unable to create a balanced attack. While Threatt (10-20 FG), Johnson (7-14 FG),
Isaac Jessup (11 points, 4-5 FG) and Baskin (eight points) got their buckets, the rest of the CMU roster went 1-for-14 from the field, an
Elijah Knudsen three with just 24 seconds to play.
The lead changed hands nine times in a gritty first half, but Westminster had a two-point lead at halftime and managed to stay ahead for the entire second half. The Griffins outrebounded CMU 38-27 and had 17 assists to the Mavericks' four.
Newly christened with a season-high No. 16 ranking in the NABC Coaches Poll, the Mavericks return home to Brownson Arena for the first time since January 7 this Saturday against Western Colorado, with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 pm. The Mountaineers will enter that game at 3-13 with a 1-11 RMAC record. Tuesday's loss drops CMU to 10-3 in the RMAC and 15-4 overall.
