Mavs Win Ninth Straight, Beat South Dakota Mines

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa won its ninth consecutive game and second straight matchup in South Dakota, defeating South Dakota Mines 69-60 to improve to 9-2 in the RMAC and 14-3 overall.

Blaise Threatt continued his torrid scoring pace by leading the Mavericks with 19 points on 7 of 14 shooting. Trevor Baskin collected 12 points on 5 of 7 shooting and seven rebounds while Mac Riniker had seven points and eight boards.

Isaac Jessup had nine points, making 3 of 5 attempts from beyond the arc. The Mavericks made 10 total threes as a team, the seventh time this season they have eclipsed the double-digit barrier and fourth time in the past five games.

Just like Friday's night emotional win over third-ranked Black Hills State, the Mavs were locked in a back-and-forth first half. South Dakota Mines jumped out to first-half leads of 9-3 and 13-9, but Colorado Mesa roared back with an 18-4 run that included three-pointers from Jessup and Owen Koonce. The Mavs eventually headed to the break with a 34-28 lead with Jessup, Reece Johnson and Ty Allred tied for the first half team lead with six points.

The Hardrockers stormed back in the second half, tying the game on two separate occasions with seven and six minutes to go. But for the second consecutive game, Threatt took over in the second period, scoring 16 of his 19 points after halftime, including a personal 5-0 run that turned a two-point Mavs lead into a seven-point lead with five minutes left. Threatt also scored CMU's final four points of the game, including the final two free throws with 39 seconds to play to ice it.

The Mavericks shot 51 percent from the field and 39 percent from three, compared to 42 percent from the field and 47 percent from three for the Hardrockers. South Dakota Mines did well from behind the arc, making 11 of 23 attempts, including four by Brevin Walter, the RMAC's third leading scorer.

Colorado Mesa held a 28-19 rebounding advantage, including 10 offensive boards. CMU outscored South Dakota Mines 12-8 in second chance points and 7-0 on the fast break.

At nine games, the Mavs now have the longest active winning streak in the RMAC. They will try to stretch it to 10 next Friday against No. 15/17 Fort Lewis, followed by a game against Westminster on Tuesday, January 24.
