Apodaca, Qunell sweep RMAC Awards

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— The nation's top-ranked Colorado Mesa University women's swimming and diving team once again swept the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's weekly awards, the conference announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Maverick sophomore Kyra Apodaca was once again named as the RMAC Women's Diver of the Week, her fourth such honor of the season and the fifth of her career.

Meanwhile, Maverick freshman Ada Qunell was named as the RMAC Swimmer of the Week for the first time in her young career.

The honors come after the Mavericks' dual doubleheader at Division I and Pac-12 Conference foe Utah last Friday and Saturday.

The RMAC did not award Men's Diver or Swimmer of the Week awards this week as less than half of the conference's men's teams competed last week.

Apodaca led the Maverick divers in both events during Saturday's dual at Utah, setting a season and career-best 6-dive score of 248.75 points to place third on the 3-meter.  The Sugar Land, Texas native also finished fourth as the top Maverick on the 1-meter board with a score of 234.45 points.

Diving events were not contested during Friday's dual with the Utes.

Meanwhile, Qunell turned in a pair of runner-up and three other third-place finishes to help lead the Mavericks in the weekend doubleheader.  On Friday, the Whitefish, Montana native finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:56.33 (1:55.13-altitude adjusted) while swimming on the Mavs' "A" relay teams that finished third in both the 400 medley and 200 free relays.

She then took third in the 200 IM (2:09.95-altitude adjusted) and fourth in the 100 fly with a personal-best time of 58.50 (altitude-adjusted) in the 100 fly on Saturday.  She also led-off the Mavs' second place 400 free relay team that day.

The Mavericks are off this weekend and will return to action on Jan. 20-21 at the Air Force Duals, where they are slated to face-off with the host falcons, BYU and Seattle University.
