CMU squads receive all possible first-place votes in RMAC Swim/Dive polls

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University's dominance of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving scene is expected to continue, according to the conference's preseason coaches' polls that were released on Wednesday.

The Maverick men's and women's teams, which have both won the past four RMAC titles, were unanimous picks to repeat in 2022-23.

The Mavericks will once again host the RMAC Championships in the El Pomar Natatorium from Feb. 8-11, 2023.

CMU's women, who set a RMAC Championship point-scoring record of 1,323 ½ points before setting a new program-record fifth place finish at the NCAA Division II National Championships, received all seven possible first place votes to top the poll with the maximum 49 points.

CMU's men, who went on to a program-best sixth place finish at the NCAA Championships after topping the conference podium, picked up all four possible first place votes to lead the poll with 16 points.

The eight women's coaches ranked their opposition 1-7 without voting for their own squad.

The Colorado School of Mines, which has finished second behind the Mavericks in the last three RMAC Championships received Maverick Coach Mickey Wender's first place vote and were picked second in the poll with 37 points.  Associate RMAC member Oklahoma Christian, third at last year's conference meet, was picked third with 37 points while UT Permian Basin, which re-joins the RMAC as another associate member, was tabbed fourth with 29 points.

The Falcons previously swam in the RMAC from 2010-13.

The bottom half of the poll includes Western Colorado (25), CSU Pueblo (18), Nebraska-Kearney (16) and Adams State (8).

In the men's poll, Oklahoma Christian was picked second with 12 points and received Wender's top billing.  Mines was right behind in third with 11 despite taking second at the last three RMAC Championships.  UT Permian Basin was picked fourth with seven points while Adams State was picked last amongst the five teams with four points.

The Mavericks will hold an intra-squad scrimmage on Friday at 3:30 p.m. before opening the season next weekend, playing host to the Intermountain Shootout next weekend (Sept. 30-Oct. 1) in the El Pomar Natatorium.  RMAC members Adams State and CSU Pueblo are slated to compete in that meet alongside four other NCAA Division I opponents in Air Force, BYU, Grand Canyon and Northern Colorado in addition to members of the CMU club team.
