LAS VEGAS, N.M.— Four different Mavericks finished with nine kills as setter
Sabrina VanDeList recorded 38 assists and 12 digs, good for her fourth double-double of the season, to help lead the nation's 21
st-ranked Colorado Mesa University volleyball team to yet another 3-set sweep on Saturday evening over host New Mexico Highlands University.
The Mavericks claimed their third straight victory by a 25-17, 25-21, 25-15 margin over the Cowgirls and improved to 8-3 overall and to 3-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matches. All eight wins have come in straight sets.
NMHU, held to a .076 attack percentage by the
Kerstin Layman-led Maverick defense, slipped to 3-9 overall and 0-4 in RMAC action.
Erin Curl,
Sierra Hunt,
Sydney Leffler and
Savannah Spitzer all finished Saturday's victory with nine kills as the Mavericks hit .248 as a team.
Tye Wedhorn also had seven kills as the Mavs dominated the Cowgirls, 44-24 in total kills during the match that lasted just one hour and 14 minutes.
Spitzer hit .467 while Wedhorn, her fellow middle, clicked at a .429 pace. Curl also hit .333 and had three blocks. Wedhorn also tallied three.
Meanwhile, Layman recorded an impressive 21 digs and was perfect on serve receive.
VanDeList also recorded a pair of early service aces in the victory, serving both on consecutive points in a match-starting 6-0 Maverick run that set the early tone for the evening.
The Cowgirls never recovered as CMU led by at least three points throughout the rest of the frame.
NMHU did get off to a good start in the second set and lead 9-5 before a 5-1 Maverick run tied the set at 10. It was also tied at 11, 12 and 13 as the teams exchanged points before the Mavs took a 16-13 lead on an attack error.
Highlands would battle back and tied the set at 19 on a service ace before a Wedhorn kill put the Mavs in front, 20-19. After an exchange of service and hitting errors, the Mavs then scored the final three points on kills by Curl and Hunt, who had the last two, to take the 2-0 overall lead.
Layman, who had nine digs in the third set alone, then served during a 6-0 Maverick run that gave CMU a 9-3 lead.
Again, the early deficit was too much for the Cowgirls to overcome as the Mavs extended their lead to eight at 14-6 before going on to win the final set rather comfortably by ten points.
The Mavericks will now return home to prepare for a showdown and re-match with fourth-ranked MSU Denver on Friday night (Sept. 23) at 6 p.m.
The Roadrunners won an earlier battle between the nationally-ranked teams in both squads' first RMAC match on Sept. 8 in Denver.
