Mavericks win three titles at MSU Denver Invite

Livingston, Thomas both finish weekend undefeated

Box Score DENVER— Sophomore Makenna Livingston and newcomer Kristen Thomas won their respective singles draws while Thomas teamed with fellow freshman Jane Steur to take the B Doubles tile as the Colorado Mesa University Maverick women's tennis team turned in an impressive effort over the weekend at the MSU Denver Invitational.

Action at the Roadrunners' Assembly Athletic Complex and the City Park Tennis Courts went late into the night on Saturday due to multiple weather delays on Saturday and continued into Sunday, but due to the backlog of matches, some of the back draw matches and the A Doubles final were not completed.

Livingston was a perfect 5-0 throughout the weekend, teaming with Issy Coman for a pair of A Doubles victories while winning A Singles competition.

In singles, she advanced to the quarterfinals via walk-over and then defeated Kinsey Fields of the host squad, taking a 10-8 tiebreaker after the players had split the first two sets, 6-4.

Livingston then took out MSU Denver's Kambra Roles, 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals before winning a thrilling 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) match over Isabel Heras to complete the trifecta of victories over Roadrunner players.

In doubles, Livingston and Coman defeated Colorado College's Olivia Dicks and Maddy Meiser, 6-2 in the opening quarterfinal round and were then 6-4 winners over Hanna Haber and Marie Cool of MSU Denver in the semifinals.  The final against the Roadrunners' Isabel Heras and Fields was not played.

Meanwhile, Thomas was 4-0 in singles and 6-0 overall.  She won her first two singles matches in straight sets over MSU Denver's Monica Guarin and Colorado College's Gigi Jensen before defeating her teammate and doubles partner, 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals.  Thomas then took out Cool in split-set tiebreaker in the B draw final.

She and Steur had a first round bye in doubles.  They then won their semifinal match, 6-2 over a Colorado College duo before defeating Guarin and Kayla Myburgh, 6-1 in the bracket final.

Steur was also victorious in her first two singles match, blanking CSU Pueblo's Sonrisa Bustamante before defeating Myburgh, 6-3, 7-5.

Coman, Paige Furin and Halle Romero all went 1-1 in singles action as the Mavs went a combined 12-7.

The team also combined for a 4-2 mark in doubles play.

The Mavericks will begin team action on Friday, facing St. Mary's (Texas) in their first of three matches at the Pueblo Duals.  They will then play Lubbock Christian and Fort Hays State on Saturday in their only other team affairs of the brief, but jam-packed fall season.
