TICKET PUNCHED: Men's Golf Qualifies for National Tournament

PUEBLO, Colo. – For the first time in program history, the Colorado Mesa men's golf team is headed to the NCAA National Championships after finishing in a tie for second place at the NCAA West South Central Super Region Tournament at Pueblo Country Club.

The Mavericks were in the lead for most of the day but struggled down the back stretch of the round. They still had their chances to come away with the win as they entered the last hole in the last pairing in a three-way tie for first place.

Colorado Mesa's Dakota Gillman and Midwestern State's Jake Doggett each bogeyed the hole while CSU Pueblo's Jamie Robert's pared giving them the Regional Championship.

Nonetheless, Colorado Mesa shot 4-over, 288 in the round for a three-round total of 6-under, 846 to claim one of the four team slots for the NCAA National Championship Tournament to be played beginning on Monday May 16 at the TPC Michigan in Detroit. It is the Mavericks first-ever appearance in the National Championship Tournament, and they were the lone team not ranked in the GolfStat Rankings to qualify from the region.

Redshirt sophomore Peter Grossenbacher led the Mavericks in the final round of competition on Saturday. Grossenbacher fired a 4-under, 67 in the final round to place in a tie for eighth place on the individua leaderboard. He opened his round with five birdies before bogeying the par-4, 451-yard No. 12.

He birdied the par-5, No. 14 before finishing his round with a bogey on No. 18.

Senior Kyle Pearson shot an even-par, 71 in his final round as he had five birdies and five bogeys on the day.

Dakota Gilman shot 5-over, 76 and finished in a tie for 15th place with a 2-under, 211 in his three rounds.

The Mavericks scored the most birdies in the tournament with 66, 11 more than second place Midwestern State.
