PUEBLO, Colo. – True freshman
Timmy Cavarno had a round he will remember for the rest of his life as he has lifted the Colorado Mesa men's golf team into second-place at the NCAA West / South Central Regional at Pueblo Country Club.

Cavarno shot a 9-under, 62 in his second round of the tournament to vault into third place on the individual leaderboard. The 62 is a school record for low round in a tournament and low round against par, eclipsing the previous mark of 6-under, 64 set by Trevor McKune during the Maverick Invite in the 2016-17 season.

The Redlands, Calif. native had six birdies, two eagles and a bogey in his round. On the front-nine, he opened his round with back-to-back birdies then eagled the par-5, 522-yard No. 5 to move to 4-under in the round. He back that up with his second eagle of the front-nine with one on the par-5, 595-yard No. 7 hole.

His lone blemish of the round came on No. 10 where he bogeyed the hole. But, he closed out the round with birdies on No. 11, No. 15, No. 16, and No. 18. His score moved him up 52 slots from round one.

While Cavarno put together a solid round two,
Dakota Gillman is putting together a solid tournament. The redshirt freshman shot a 68 in round one and backed it up in today's round two with a 4-under, 67 to move up to a tie for first-place on the individual leaderboard.

Gillman opened his round with back-to-back birdies on holes one and two before closing out the front-nine with three more birdies and a bogey. He played the back-nine to an even par-36. While his teammate, Cavarno, made hay on the par-5s, Gillman leads the tournament in par-3 scoring at 2-under.

Senior
Kyle Pearson shot 2-over while
Peter Grossenbacher and
Yael Chahin each shot 3-over in today's round.

The impressive rounds have put the Mavericks in contention to land a spot in the NCAA National Championships as they sit in second place with a 10-under, 558 after two rounds. They are just one stroke back of No. 16 Midwestern State for the top spot on the team leaderboard.

The Mavericks sit three strokes in front of host CSU Pueblo and eight strokes up on St. Mary's for fourth-place. Oklahoma Christian, Cal State San Marcos and Stanislaus State are all in a tie for fifth-place at 1-under, 567.

The Mavericks tied the school record for low team round with an 8-under, 276 on Friday.

The top four teams on the final leaderboard will advance to the NCAA National Championships at the TPC Michigan in Detroit. Along with the top four teams, the top two individuals not on an advancing team will qualify for the championships.

Tomorrow's third and final round will begin at 7:30am.
