Mavericks Complete Day One of NCAA Championships

DEARBORN, Mich. – The Colorado Mesa men's golf team competed in the first round of the NCAA Championships on Monday (May 16) at the TPC Michigan and hosted by Wayne State University.

Play was halted for 35-minutes during the afternoon due to lightning, but all teams were able to complete their first round of play.

The Mavericks are currently in 18th place on the team leaderboard after the first round concluded. They fired a 23-over, 311 and are 11 strokes behind the all-important eighth place position. They are nine strokes in front of Charleston and just six strokes from reaching the top-12.

UIndy leads the stroke play portion of the tournament after firing an even-par, 288 as they were one of the first schools to complete their round. They lead top ranked Barry by two strokes and RMAC foe CSU Pueblo by seven strokes after day one.

Peter Grossenbacher and Timmy Cavarno each shot a 4-over, 76 in their first round to lead the Mavericks.

Grossenbacher played the steadiest of the Mavericks as he had 14 pars on his scorecard against two doubles and a bogey. His lone birdie of the day came on the par 3, 185-yard No. 15 hole which played as the third toughest hole on the day with the average score nearly a half a stroke over par.

Cavarno was one of three Mavericks to record two birdies in their round. His birdies came on the par 5, 565-yard No. 7 and the par 5, 519-yard No. 13 holes. He had three bogeys and a double to complete his round.

UIndy's Oliver Mast leads the individual leaderboard after firing a 3-under, 69 in his first round.

The top eight teams after Wednesday's third round will advance to the medal/match round play where teams will play each other head-to-head to advance for a chance at the NCAA Championship.

The Mavericks are scheduled to tee off at 7:20am mountain time tomorrow with the same teams they played with today in Chsrleston and Arkansas Tech.
