The No. 14 Colorado Mesa baseball team will host the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament for the tenth straight season after winning the regular season title this past weekend. MAY DAY
May 2022 has rolled around which means lefty
Ryan Day is coming into his own and ready for the postseason. In this past weekend's start against CSU Pueblo, Day pitched a complete game (eight innings) and allowed four runs on six hits, walked two and struck out a season-high 13 batters to improve his record to 5-0 on the season.
Â
In five starts during the month of May since he became a Maverick, Day is 4-1 in 30 innings pitched and has allowed 28 hits, nine walks and struck out 34.
Â
OUR FAVORITE KIND OF CARR
Senior centerfielder
Johnny Carr led the Mavericks in hitting this past weekend in the series with CSU Pueblo. He batted .533 (8-for-15) with a double, two runs scored, and three runs driven in.
Â
Over the past three series, he has 22 hits (2.0 hits per game) and hitting .537 in that time. He has raised his season batting from .368 prior to the series with New Mexico Highlands to a now .422 heading into the postseason.
Â
THE ORCHARD AVENUE BOMBERS
The Mavericks have flirted with the long ball all season long and one would think this week wouldn't be any different. They currently ranked third nationally in both total home runs (104) and home runs per game (2.17).
Â
Haydn McGeary,
Caleb Farmer, and
Spencer Bramwell have all reached the 20-home run plateau for the season and rank among the nation's top-12 in the category. McGeary is tied for the national lead with a school single season record of 26 home runs while Farmer has 23 home runs and sits fourth nationally. Bramwell joined the fray this past weekend with 20 and is 12
th in the nation.

WHERE WE STAND
Colorado Mesa was No. 2 in last week's NCAA South Central Region rankings and are projected to be in the same spot again this week. At this point, we are comfortable saying the Mavericks will make the field of teams for the NCAA Tournament.
Â
Angelo State will likely be the No. 1 team in the region with West Texas A&M third, Texas A&M-Kingsville fourth, UT Tyler, MSU Denver, Lubbock Christian and St. Edward's battling it out for the fifth and sixth slots in the rankings.
Â
Regis, MSU Denver, CSU Pueblo, Colorado School of Mines, and UCCS are headed to Colorado Mesa for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament.
Â
St. Edward's, West Texas A&M, and UT Tyler are headed to Angelo State for the Lone Star Conference Tournament.
Â
The winners of the conference tournaments will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA South Central Regional.
Â
THE WINNING WAY
As it was announced by the NCAA last year that Colorado Mesa was the winningest baseball team of the past decade. To shorten the window even more, they have the highest winning percentage since 2017 at .806. They have a higher winning percentage then some of the top programs in Division II baseball including Angelo State (.770), North Greenville (.768), Tampa (.759), and Central Missouri (.747).
Â
Colorado Mesa is in search of their 41
st straight winning season.
Â
THE SKIPPER
The Mavericks are headed up by living legend
Chris Hanks who is the Mavericks all-time leader in wins with an overall record of 980-379 and has won nearly 72 percent of the games he has coached in. He is entering his 24
th season as the head coach and has guided the Mavericks to 17 RMAC Championships, 17 NCAA Tournament appearances and four trips to the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
Â
During his tenure, he has been named the RMAC Coach of the Year 12 times, the ABCA Regional Coach of the Year four times and was twice named the NCBWA National Coach of the Year.
Â
Coach Hanks is always quick to point to his coaching staff when discussing his personal successes as the staff has been intact for the past 12 seasons with others having been on staff just as long and longer than his entire coaching tenure.
Â
PRESEASON POLLS
The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference preseason poll was released earlier this year and once again the Mavericks were picked to win the regular season title unanimously. They received all eight first-place votes possible and will be in search of their 25
th overall and 10
th straight regular season titles. UCCS was picked second followed by MSU Denver, and Regis to round out the top four.
Â
Colorado Mesa has gained national attention by being picked No. 2 in the Collegiate Baseball Preseason National Poll despite the Mavericks not making it to Cary last season. Tampa was the preseason pick to make it back to the National Championship Tournament and win it.
Â
In the NCBWA Preseason National Poll, the Mavericks were picked No. 4 behind Tampa, defending national champion Wingate and Central Missouri.
Â
ON DECK
Colorado Mesa will play in the NCAA South Central Regional next week. Site, opponent, location, and time are all yet to be determined.
