Box Score 2 DENVER, Colo. - The No. 7 Colorado Mesa Mavericks split a Saturday (Apr. 9) doubleheader at the Assembly Athletic Complex.
In game one of the doubleheader, the Mavericks suffered their worst defeat of the year in an 18-4 loss to MSU Denver. The loss snapped a 16-game winning streak they had over the Roadrunners that dated back to the 2017 season.
Colorado Mesa trailed 9-2 entering the top half of the fifth inning. Spencer Bramwell and Johnny Carr each hit solo home runs in the inning to narrow the gap to 9-4, but that was all the closer they would get.
Carr finished the game 2-for-3 while fellow outfielder Julian Boyd was 2-for-3 with a run driven in.
Caleb Farmer hit his 15th home run of the season in the fourth inning. Farmer belted a full count pitch over the wall in left center for the round tripper.
Cooper Vasquez was saddled with the loss to fall to 3-1 on the season.
In the true night cap of the doubleheader, Caleb Farmer finished the game 4-for-4 to lead the Mavericks to an 11-2 win over the Roadrunners and exact a little revenge for the lopsided loss earlier in the day.
In the top of the second inning, Farmer got the Mavericks on the board with his 16th home run of the season to give Colorado Mesa a 1-0 lead. The homer came on a 1-1 pitch and went out to right center. The big fly gives Farmer 16 on the season tying his teammate and MSU Denver's Bill Ralston for the conference lead.
Farmer wasn't done yet. In the third inning, he delivered a RBI single to make the score 2-0. The Mavericks scored six runs on five hits and left two on base in the inning to lead 7-0 after three innings.
In the fourth inning, Farmer collected his third hit of the game and one batter later scored as Spencer Bramwell hit a two-run homer to right center to make it 9-0 Mavs.
In his final at-bat of the game, Farmer took the outright lead in the RMAC home run race as he deposited his second home run of the game over the fence in center field to make it 11-1.
Both Bramwell and Farmer finished with four runs driven in while Carr had two hits as well.
Blake Rohm made his way back into the rotation after taking last week off. Rohm improved to 4-1 on the season as he allowed two runs (one earned), on four hits and struck out three in six innings of work. The junior needed just 67 pitches and retired the first 10 batters he faced.
The two teams will conclude their series tomorrow beginning at 1pm.
