GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Hometown sophomore
Julianna Campos went 2-0 to lead the Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team's efforts in a Friday afternoon dual against MSU Denver here at the Elliott Tennis Center.
The match-up was the Mavericks' long-awaited home-opener but was spoiled by the Roadrunners, who triumphed, 5-2.
Campos and freshman
Paige Furin had won their No. 3 doubles match by a 6-2 margin over Monica Guarin and Kayla Myburgh. Campos then defeated Myburgh at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-2 to extend her singles winning streak to five while reaching double-figures for victories. Campos has also won her last five doubles matches.
The Mavericks also picked up a win at No. 1 singles as
Makenna Livingston won by retirement after Ava Neuburger-Higby played one point. The Roadrunner's top player had been noticeably injured during the No. 1 doubles match but bravely gutted it out serving the final game in a 6-4 win alongside Isabel Heras over Livingston and CMU's
Macy Richards. That victory allowed the Roadrunners to seize the doubles point.
After Neubruger-Higby's retirement, which put the Mavericks on the board at 1-1 in the team score, the Roadrunners seized control winning the No. 2, 3, 4 and 6 singles matches in straight sets.
Richards' No. 4 match was the closest of the four but went Marie Cool's way, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
The Roadrunners improved to 9-8 win the win while the Mavericks fell to 9-13 entering a Saturday morning encounter with winless CSU Pueblo, a team they thumped 7-0 last Sunday (Apr. 3) in Pueblo.
Saturday's match will begin at 9:30 a.m.
