The No. 12 Colorado Mesa baseball team (27-9, 14-6 RMAC) will head out on the road for the next two weeks for Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchups. This week, they will head to the Land of Enchantment for a four-game series with New Mexico Highlands (15-27, 10-14 RMAC) that begins on Friday in Las Vegas.
Â
RMAC PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Redshirt junior righthander
Blake Rohm was named the RMAC Pitcher of the Week joining his staff mates
Josh Danyliw,
Kannon Handy and
Cooper Vasquez. Rohm allowed one run on two hits, while striking out five in five innings against Regis last Friday. The Broomfield native allowed the Rangers to hit just .118 and he retired eight of the final nine batters he faced.
Â
The Butler CC and University of Virginia transfer is now 5-1 on the season with a 2.43 ERA in 33 and a third innings. He is second on the team with 40 strikeouts and leads the team with a .189 opponent's batting average.
Â
UNSUNG HERO
One of the unsung heroes over the years is senior
Johnny Carr. The Coto de Caza, Calif. product has quietly gone about his business and has consistently produced results. This season, he has anchored center field and batted in the nine-hole in 21 of the 24 games he has started. He is batting .368 with seven doubles, a triple, a home run and scored 24 runs.
Â
Most forget but Carr was the starting left fielder for the Mavericks in the 2019 National Championship game against Tampa. He collected one of the Mavericks five hits in the game.
Â
During his career, Carr has 68 wins when he is in the starting lineup. He has batted .333 in 182 total games played with 20 doubles, five home runs and 79 runs scored.

NEWCOMER TO WATCH
Junior
Julian Boyd is making a serious push for one of the starting outfield spots. The transfer from Golden West College and University of Nevada batted .600 (6-for-10) with four runs scored, a double and three walks in the series with Regis.
Â
For the season, the Los Angeles native is batting .429 with a .508 on-base percentage while riding a mini six-game hitting streak.
Â
SCOUTING THE COWBOYS
New Mexico Highlands has had an up and down season but appears to have things headed in the right direction as of late. The Cowboys took three of four from upstart CSU Pueblo then split with Colorado School of Mines in Las Vegas last weekend.
Â
He may not be the leading hitter on the team but may be the scariest hitter is Estevan De La O, a returning all-region player for the Cowboys. De La O is batting .365 with nine doubles, 10 triples, and two home runs with 43 runs scored and 25 runs driven in. He has had a multi-hit game in six of his last ten games played that includes a pair of 2-for-4 performances against Mines last weekend.
Â
Jadrian Martinez leads the team in strikeouts with 44 strikeouts in 49 innings pitched. He had a season-high seven strikeouts in seven innings pitched last weekend against Colorado School of Mines. He leads the team in wins with four.
Â
THE WINNING WAY
As it was announced by the NCAA last year that Colorado Mesa was the winningest baseball team of the past decade. To shorten the window even more, they have the highest winning percentage since 2017 at .806. They have a higher winning percentage then some of the top programs in Division II baseball including Angelo State (.770), North Greenville (.768), Tampa (.759), and Central Missouri (.747).
Â
Colorado Mesa is in search of their 41
st straight winning season.
Â
THE SKIPPER
The Mavericks are headed up by living legend
Chris Hanks who is the Mavericks all-time leader in wins with an overall record of 971-376 and has won nearly 72 percent of the games he has coached in. He is entering his 24
th season as the head coach and has guided the Mavericks to 16 RMAC Championships, 17 NCAA Tournament appearances and four trips to the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
Â
During his tenure, he has been named the RMAC Coach of the Year 12 times, the ABCA Regional Coach of the Year four times and was twice named the NCBWA National Coach of the Year.
Â
Coach Hanks is always quick to point to his coaching staff when discussing his personal successes as the staff has been intact for the past 12 seasons with others having been on staff just as long and longer than his entire coaching tenure.
Â
PRESEASON POLLS
The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference preseason poll was released earlier this year and once again the Mavericks were picked to win the regular season title unanimously. They received all eight first-place votes possible and will be in search of their 25
th overall and 10
th straight regular season titles. UCCS was picked second followed by MSU Denver, and Regis to round out the top four.
Â
Colorado Mesa has gained national attention by being picked No. 2 in the Collegiate Baseball Preseason National Poll despite the Mavericks not making it to Cary last season. Tampa was the preseason pick to make it back to the National Championship Tournament and win it.
Â
In the NCBWA Preseason National Poll, the Mavericks were picked No. 4 behind Tampa, defending national champion Wingate and Central Missouri.
Â
ON DECK
The Mavericks will continue their eight-game road swing next weekend over on the Front Range. They will take on the Colorado Christian Cougars in a four game series at All-Star Park beginning on Friday April 29.
