Lexington, KY – Colorado Mesa's
Tye Wedhorn and
Sabrina VanDeList picked up American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and College Beach Volleyball (CBVB) Pair of the Week honors announced Monday (April 18).
A first for the pair and the program, they find themselves in the likes of pairs out of USC, TCU, LSU, UCLA, and Florida State who received recognition in the weeks prior – making them the only Division II pair to take home to the accolade.
The duo who play in the five slot for the Mavericks had an impressive showing over the weekend at the AVCA Small College Beach Championships in Tavares, Florida as they finished the tournament with a flawless 5-0 record, dropping just two sets throughout pool play and knockout rounds.
Their biggest win came in the semifinal round when all eyes were on them with the dual tied at 2-2. Clutch under pressure they secured the game winning point with a 15-12 win in the deciding set, upsetting top-seed and defending champion Tampa and sending the Mavs to the championship match.
They finished with a 16-5 record, riding a six-game win streak to close out the season.
Colorado Mesa captured the AVCA Division II Small College Beach Championship, a first for the program, turning away Spring Hill College 3-1 in the final dual. It marked the first time in the history of the event that a non-coastal team took home the title.
Coming into the tournament as the No. 6 seed, they went 2-1 in pool play, going unbeaten in bracket play en route to hoisting the championship trophy Saturday afternoon.
